How SNES emulators got a few pixels from complete perfection
As the lead coder of bsnes, I've been attempting to perfect Super Nintendo emulation for the past 15 years. We are now at a point where that goal is in sight, but there we face one last challenge: accurate cycle timing of the SNES video processors. Getting that final bit of emulation accuracy will require a community effort that I hope some of you can help with. But first, let me recap how far we've come.

People Have Worked Out How to Unlock Playstation Classic's Emulator Settings
PlayStation Classic owners can easily tweak the settings of their console if they have the right keyboard. The PlayStation Classic launched yesterday, and as expected, people are poking around the hardware looking for ways to hack the console. It turns out it's as easy as plugging in a keyboard and hitting the Escape key while inside a game.

Nintendo Takes Legal Action Against Two Notorious Arizona-Based ROM Websites
Nintendo has reportedly filed a lawsuit at the federal court in the US state of Arizona earlier this week, with the publisher calling out two ROM and emulator websites - allegedly owned by the same Arizona-based company - for unfair competition as well as copyright and trademark infringement. Nintendo is requesting statutory damages of $150,000 per infringement, and up to $2,000,000 for each trademark infringement. According to the source, this could theoretically equate to $100 million in damages.

Asheron’s Call emulator lead explains what went down with the cease-and-desist
What are lawyers good for? Pouring lemon juice on the open wounds of an MMO community desperately trying to hold on to the remnant of their closed game, apparently. The closure of at least one Asheron’s Call emulator earlier this month was confirmed this week to be what many assumed: a cease-and-desist letter from Warner Bros. One of the main forces behind the emulator projects, a player named Pea, posted an account stating how he initially wrote to WB about the game’s closure and his growing involvement in the emulator scene.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild PC emulator effort gets $23k a month in funding
Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the best reviewed games of all time, heck it is one of the best games of all time. But the only way to play it is if you got a Switch or a Wii U. Which is why there’s a team of fans working on bringing the game to the PC via an emulator. And because of the size of Breath of the Wild, it’s quite an undertaking. However, the team at CEMU, who are working on the emulator, have been getting lots of support from fans. Not just nice messages from fans, but actual monetary support.

How a new emulator generates 3D scenes from 2D NES games
The world of NES emulation hasn't been all that exciting since the late '90s, when NESticle provided "good enough" emulation accuracy and stability for any NES game out there (though there has been a lot of subsequent work to get that final bit of true emulation accuracy). So it was a bit of a surprise this week to stumble across a new NES emulator that provides a genuinely new perspective on decades-old games by rendering them in three dimensions.

Digital Foundry: Hands-on with PS4's PlayStation 2 emulation
It's been a long time since we first reported that classic PS1 and PS2 titles were heading to PlayStation 4, running under emulation. It's been so long in fact, that we began to wonder whether Sony had shelved the project. The company originally informed developers of the existence of the emulator at the same time it briefed them on the planned rollout for the PlayStation Now cloud service, way back in January 2014. Since then, the only hints at its...

Just some footage I afk recorded of Cemu running MK8 time trials replays. Only transparent objects render right now, so normal gameplay is impossible. No sound. Version history: 1.0.0 - displays loading screen, cropped to bottom left 64x64, crashes before title 1.0.1 - gets ingame, only renders frames every few seconds or when pause is pressed. still has 64x64 scissor problem. 1.0.2 - scissor problem fixed, sky no longer renders, now renders each frame.

Dolphin - July 2015 Progress Report
Since the release of Dolphin 4.0, things have advanced quite a bit. With compatibility rising to their highest levels yet alongside features that seemed impossible and extravagant, users have been asking about the next stable for almost a year now. For previous releases, including Dolphin 4.0, the staff mostly ceased work on new features while crashes and regressions were addressed. In the case of working toward Dolphin 5.0; there were just too many interesting and exciting features on the...
