Baidu says its massive deep-learning system is nearly complete
Baidu says its 100-billion-neuron deep learning system will be complete within six months, powering a fast transition away from text as the dominant search input. Thanks to smartphones and its new Baidu Eye technology, the company expects voice and image search to dominate within five years.

Is it possible that within a couple decades, reading and writing will no longer be core competencies?
I think so, once we get to a stage when we can communicate by thinking with anyone and anything, there really would be no point for reading and writing. You can simply access everything in such a way that it would be similar to dreaming or imagining something. Written text is simply a middleman, to arrive at that imaginative point. Who knows, I personally like reading and not sure if I would trade up for such instant gratification.
I doubt text search will be replaced anytime soon. But what do I know.
