Because the companies they work for are too greedy/selfish to give anyone a living wage besides themselves. I call this trickle up economics.
Or deep rooted weed economics, sucking up resources from the "environment" is what they are good at.
Well at least some "weeds" are useful and provide food for wildlife. These companies,as you indicated,are just bloated ticks sucking the life blood out of everything for the almighty $$$.
