Ray Kurzweil popularized the Terminator-like moment he called the “singularity," when artificial intelligence (AI) overtakes human thinking. With all the advancements that have been made within the robotics industry and artificial intelligence, are we finally at the cusp of this reality? I find the author to simply be ignorant, if not egotistical.
Currently yes. But it's ignorant to think it never could. If the goal of robotics is to make our lives easier, it's only natural that we'd strive for robots to be completely self-sufficient. We'd have robot "doctors"/mechanics that fix other robots so we never have to deal with it. Whole industries would be automated. This would be true for artificial intelligence, once we achieve the "brain code" and put it in robots, they will teach each other instead of humans teaching them.
If we choose to go that way, we could make ourselves obsolete in time. Maybe not in my lifetime or the next generation's lifetime, but at some point. THAT is the reality.
I don't see how putting large swaths of people out of work is an "improvement."
