So is this like the Linux of smartphones? Most of this stuff was unintelligible for me...

It's a smartphone designed to be better than what all the big brands produce - HTC, Samsung, Sony etc. It is running Android, not Linux. Aside from the iOS of the iPhone, Android is the OS most smartphones are running on.

The OnePlus One is special because its hardware is very advanced and the Android version is a sleeker, more tweaked one (CyanogenMod) than the ones the big brands are running, which are full of software you never really use. What's really special is the price though, $300 for a smartphone with these features is unbelievably cheap compared to its competitors!

Only real downside is not supporting the 800 band of 4G,used throughout the UK.
