Winamp was a product of its time; a once-decent MP3 player that existed in an era when people either bought CDs or pirated MP3s through filesharing networks like Kazaa, Napster, Limewire, etc. The alternatives like Windows Media Player and Quicktime were comparatively quite shit so it's easy to see why Winamp caught on.
Nowadays, people have access to services like Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal and Spotify which allow you to stream unlimited music through their own software. There's hardly even an incentive to pirate anymore.
