Religious people are overwhelmed by the lack of evidence for their favorite imaginary friend in the sky, and they will gladly pay anyone who tells them that they're right in a convincing way. This is a massive market for con men and charlatans.
As always during history, believers hang on to anything that hasn't yet been explained purely by physical phenomena as a proof of God. As deGrasse Tyson nicely put it, this "God" is nothing more than an ever-receding pocket of scientific ignorance.
