India insists: Obama’s tree is not dead - The Boston Globe

Officials in India want to make one thing clear: The tree that President Obama planted in New Delhi three weeks ago is not dead. It just looks dead. The peepal tree was covered with leaves when Obama planted it at the New Delhi memorial to Indian independence leader Mohandas K. Gandhi. By Thursday, though, it was just a single lonely stem.

Bad breath and armpit odor: the arch-nemeses of mankind's entire social structure no doubt! The advertising industry may be forgiven for promoting these types of harmless, helpful, and for the most part effective health and hygiene products. But should ads encourage the use of pharmaceutical medicines? Just watching them discuss all the possible side effects is enough to discourage me. After their review of all the terrible health issues their new drug might cause, the disease sometimes seems preferable to the cure. Just what are the pros and cons of pharmaceutical advertising? Forbes Magazine discusses this very issue.

After the attacks in France on a newspaper and kosher market by Islamic radicals, attention in Europe has been focused on the continuing threat of homegrown Islamic radicals. Europe’s proximity to the Middle East feeds the fear that young European Muslims may return home after fighting for ISIS and put their new found skills to work.

While the United States shares some of that same fear, as some Americans have traveled to fight with the Islamic State or been arrested trying to do so, a threat closer to home poses as great a danger in the form of suspected training camps for Islamic terrorists here in the United States, in every part of the country. Some of these camps have allegedly been operating for years with no interference from the government and little monitoring of them.

In 1938, Orson Welles narrated a radio broadcast of "War of the Worlds" as a series of simulated radio bulletins of what was happening in real time as Martians arrived on our home planet. The broadcast is widely remembered for creating public panic, although to what extent is hotly debated today.

Still, the incident serves as an illustration of what could happen when the first life beyond Earth is discovered. While scientists might be excited by the prospect, introducing the public, politicians and interest groups to the idea could take some time.

Officials: Florida suspect napped during chase; snoring gave it away

(AP) — Officials say a Florida man suspected of stealing a car took off on foot from a traffic stop and briefly eluded deputies while he grabbed a nap under a nearby trailer. The Pensacola News Journal (http://on.pnj.com/1AnV10m) reports that deputies followed the sound of 37-year-old Kevin Lee Barbour's snoring — described as a "snorting wild boar" — to discover him Sunday night in Santa Rose County.
