Postmodern Jukebox feat. Puddles - Chandelier

Chances are, if you're familiar with social media, you've seen at least one of Postmodern Jukebox's stylized pop covers. This one features Puddles, the "Sad Clown with the Golden Voice" of Puddles' Pity Party.

Sage Francis - Make Em Purr

This is a fantastic song from Sage's 2014 album, Copper Gone. I think the video is beautifully animated. The song was a last minute addition to the album, and the very personal lyrics were written and recorded in one night.

Okkervil River - For Real (2005)

Okkervil River have released seven albums since 2002 and are one of those bands that haven't broken big, but have a strong and loyal fan base. This song always stood out for me. I love this song.

Aimee Curl and Sxip Shirey - Brooklyn Bridge Song

A short song with the great Sxip Shirey. As well as some crazy compositions with home made instruments, Sxip sometimes puts out the odd song of sublime and gentle beauty. This is one of them.

The pAper chAse - What Should We Do With Your Body (The Lightning)

The Paper Chase has to be one of my favourite bands ever. The main writer and lead singer is John Congleton, a respected music producer who has worked with lots of well known acts. What I love most about them is the discordant and sometimes difficult to listen to arrangements, which often climax and give way to beautiful conclusions (that are so much more affecting in context). Perhaps one for the musicians among us.

    Arto Tunçboyacıyan - Broken Arm

This is a track from Armenian folk-influenced artist Arto Tunçboyacıyan. It's haunting and beautiful - I recommend giving it a shot even if you don't normally like non-English speaking music. Sometimes he sings in a made up quasi-language to emphasize the importance of the sound it makes. I used to listen to this album every night before I slept. Occasionally, I'd wake up to one of the later tracks in a dazed dreamlike state. It was awesome.

    The Uncluded - Delicate Cycle

The Uncluded sound a little weird at first. No way around it. Then they sound unique and interesting. It is the unlikely collaboration between rapper Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson of anti-folk staple, The Moldy Peaches. This song comes from their 2003 album, Hokey Fright.

The World/Inferno Friendship Society - Thumb Cinema

World Inferno is an awesome (currently 8-piece) band that mixes punk/cabaret/klezmer and lots of other styles to create a truly unique, ever-evolving sound. There is something exciting about the abandon in Jack Terricloth's lyrics and delivery. It's like a crazy circus without the cringe. This song is from their fourth studio album, Addicted to Bad Ideas.

    Therapy? - Six Mile Water

Therapy? are, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest straight up rock bands of the last three decades. After having achieved a brief taste of mainstream success in the 90s, they've consistently produced quality music (to the tune of 14 studio albums to date). One of the most overlooked bands in the current landscape. This downbeat song, from their 1999 album Suicide Pact - You First, is a departure from their often heavier guitar-driven approach. The guitar solos alone make it worth a listen.

The Mountain Goats - Sax Rohmer #1

Initially just John Darnielle, who would appear on stage alone and say "Hi, we're The Mountain Goats", this is probably my all time favourite band. The guitar is often simple but the lyrics are arguably some of the best of any current-generation songwriter. Originally, Darnielle released lo-fi albums of his acoustic songs, recorded on a Panasonic boom box. Later, as a fully-formed band, the music took a more polished feel, but never wavers from its original lyrical brilliance.
