The Pirate Bay is testing pirate streaming again

If you want to stream The Mandalorian but don't have a Disney+ subscription, there's a new, albeit illegal option: The Pirate Bay. A new green "play" button, or in some cases a "B" button, allows you to stream popular pirated streams on a new site called "BayStream," as spotted by TorrentFreak. It works with most film or TV show via a very simple YouTube-style interface that lets you play or skip to any part of the show, according to some quick testing.

The notorious torrent index site The Pirate Bay has resumed using users’ CPU to mine Monero (XMR) on their website. On July 4th, The Pirate Bay added a disclaimer at the bottom of their website which stated: “By entering TPB you agree to XMR being mined using your CPU. If you don’t agree please leave now or install an adBlocker” As CCN reported, The Pirate Bay conducted a one-day trial back in September to test out mining Monero using visitors CPU’s. 'Game of Thrones Season 7 Pirated Over a Billion Times'

The seventh season of Game of Thrones has brought tears and joy to HBO this summer. It was the most-viewed season thus far, with record-breaking TV ratings. But on the other hand, HBO and Game of Thrones were plagued by hacks, leaks, and piracy, of course. While it’s hard to measure piracy accurately, streaming in particular, piracy tracking outfit MUSO has just released some staggering numbers. According to the company, the latest season was pirated more than a billion times in total.

FBI Cannot Examine Megaupload Servers, Canada Appeal Court Rules

When Megaupload was raided in 2012, more than 1,100 servers were seized in the United States. In addition, 32 were targeted in Canada, and the battle to determine who can access them has continued ever since. The Ontario Court of Appeal has now decided that won't be the FBI. It’s incredible to think that more than five years after the raids on Megaupload, in some respects the case has made virtually no progress. This is particularly true of the defunct company’s servers in Canada.

Behind the scenes, groups of individuals are trying to make BitTorrent better with steady, incremental updates. A new proposal tabled by P2P developer Luca Matteis envisions a tweak to the protocol that would allow greater resilience in the BitTorrent ecosystem. Regardless of differing opinions on what kind of content should be shifted around using the protocol, few will contest the beauty of BitTorrent.

A few hours ago and without warning, Torrentz disabled its search functionality. At first sight the main page looks normal but those who try to find links to torrents will notice that they’re no longer there.

Pirate Bay Founder: The 'Piracy' Scene Needs Innovation

Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde says that the "piracy" scene needs more innovation if it wants to sustain itself. In the wake of the KickassTorrents shutdown, he argues that the current ecosystem relies too heavily on a few large sites. More decentralization is the key to solve this vulnerability.

BitTorrent’s live TV news network will launch on July 18 at the Republican National Convention

BitTorrent has revealed that it will launch its much-touted live news network on July 18 at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Cleveland, Ohio. The news comes less than a week after the company revealed that it had hired a former Vice and CNN producer to head up the new BitTorrent News streaming channel. Serving as news director, Harrison Bohrman will lead a team of six, which includes a triumvirate of former Al Jazeera reporters and producers, presumably made possible by Al Jazeera America’s decision to close shop earlier this year.

Sony Pictures Targets Torrent Sites With Preemptive Takedowns

While it’s not widely publicized, many larger torrent sites regularly remove links to infringing files. This allows copyright holders to somewhat limit the availability of their works on the Internet. Generally speaking, movie studios and other rightsholders hire anti-piracy companies to track down infringing content. These outfits then send takedown notices to the sites in question. In India, the local Sony Pictures’ representatives are taking a different approach.

Napster Founder's Movie Plan Will Fuel Torrent Sites, Theaters Say

Last week news broke that having dumped the recording industry on its head a decade-and-a-half ago, Napster founder Sean Parker is now turning his attentions to the world of cinema. Kanye West reportedly considering legal action against Pirate Bay over Life of Pablo

Kanye West is reportedly meeting with his legal team to discuss the possibility of suing file-sharing hub The Pirate Bay. West's new album The Life of Pablo has been "setting illegal download records" as would-be listeners flock to grab it from illicit file-sharing sites, including The Pirate Bay. World's Oldest Torrent Is Still Being Shared After 4,419 Days

BitTorrent is an excellent distribution mechanism, but for a file to live on at least one person has to keep sharing it. This means that most torrents eventually die after the public loses interest. However, some torrents seem to live on forever. More than ten years ago TorrentFreak reported on a fan-made ASCII version of The Matrix, describing it as a really old torrent. This torrent had survived for 696 days, which was a rarity.

KickassTorrents Launches its Own Release Group

KickassTorrents, the world's most popular torrent site, has launched its own release group. KATRG has added more than twenty-one movie releases in the past several days, including Oscar screeners Room, Brooklyn and The Peanuts Movie. Perhaps unsurprisingly, copyright holders are already paying attention. When it comes to obtaining and placing unauthorized content online, so-called ‘release groups’ are what makes the world of piracy tick.
