Uber reportedly bought at least 100,000 Mercedes Benz S-Classes

Quick recap: ride-sharing behemoth Uber is famous for connecting passengers with people who have their own cars. (Well, among other things.) Uber doesn't own a fleet of cars for would-be drivers to use, which makes the fact that the company seems to have purchased least 100,000 Mercedes Benz S-Classes from Daimler all the more fascinating. What gives? Germany's Manager Magazin, which broke the story earlier today...

Rocket League developer teases basketball mode

Rocket League, Psyonix's wildly successful combination of cars and soccer, is apparently trading the pitch for the court, based on a tease tweeted by the developer last night. Yes, basketball is coming to Rocket League. Psyonix tweeted the teaser image last night, hinting that a "Rocket League Hoops" mode is in the works, just in time for the NCAA college basketball tournament...

New Tesla Model 3 details revealed one month before its big unveiling

The Tesla Model 3 may very well be the most highly anticipated vehicle the car industry has seen in years. Set to be unveiled on March 31 with mass production and deliveries slated to begin in late 2017, the Model 3 represents the culmination of Elon Musk’s big bet on electric vehicles leaping into the mainstream. And with a pricetag of $35,000 before incentives, the car will certainly be affordable enough to have a significant impact on the auto industry at large.

Electric Fantasy: Will the Next Tesla Sell for $25,000?

Tesla Motors Inc. was built with one overriding objective: to bring electric cars to the masses. After more than a decade of work, Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk believes it’s just about time. The company is set to begin taking pre-orders on its $35,000 Model 3 next month—and by $35,000, Tesla really means as little as $25,000. Tesla has confirmed that the $35,000 price tag on the Model 3 doesn't include the significant federal...

The future is here, some assembly required

Technology moves fast. So fast, in fact, that it’s easy to take it for granted. Smartphones, which have been around for a decade or more, are so ubiquitous and such an integral part of our daily lives that it’s easy to forget just how advanced they really are. New products, like wearables, are almost always billed as something bigger and better than their reality. Things like streaming services, social networks, smartphones, tablets...

Why Electric Cars Are Ditching AM Radio

Electric cars may be energy efficient Earth-saving futuremobiles, but their rise could also have a strange unintended consequence: killing off the oldest form of radio. Two popular electric cars, the BMW i3 and Tesla Model X, are ditching terrestrial AM radio because electromagnetic noise from the electric motor interferes with the broadcast reception, causing static, as the blog Music 3.0 recently pointed out.

General Motors launches Maven, a car-sharing service

General Motors Co. has launched a car-sharing service that lets users reserve and unlock vehicles with their smartphones. The service, called Maven, debuted Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich., and will initially focus on serving students and faculty at the University of Michigan. GM vehicles are to be available at 21 spots throughout the city. Users can rent a car through a free smartphone app, which is also used to unlock the vehicle, GM said.

Driving a Ford Model T Is a Lot Harder Than You'd Think! We Tried It

Jan. 21 -- Starting in 1908, Henry Ford sold his novel Model T cars as the first to be really accessible to the masses. What's more, he marketed them as easy to handle for casual drivers and (gasp!) women since they started with a button rather than a crank. Thing is, those old Model Ts were still pretty complicated to drive. Bloomberg Pursuits' Hannah Elliott took a 1914 Model T for a spin but first she needed a driving lesson.

Volvo promises deathproof cars by 2020

Volvo has made a shocking pledge: By 2020, no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car or SUV. Seriously. "If you meet Swedish engineers, they're pretty genuine," said Lex Kerssemakers, CEO of Volvo Cars North America. "They don't say things when they don't believe in it." There is one big caveat. If someone really wants to hurt themselves, or is just really, really stupid... well, Volvo can't do anything about that. But, assuming you're not a suicidal...

Tesla Model S Can Now Drive Without You

Well, authorities in Hong Kong aren’t going to like this one bit. Back in November, they told Tesla to remotely disable its semiautonomous driving technology until they can confirm that the features, released in mid October, are safe. They were concerned (sort of understandably) by widely reported hijinks by drivers who were using Tesla’s new Autopilot software to shave and sit in the backseat of the car, among other things.

Mad Mike Whiddett and his Mazda MX-5 "RADBUL" Drift Highlands

2015 was AWESOME. Smoke, speed and precision driving… just another day in the office for Mad Mike. At the highest level of professional drifting, race cars are thrown sideways at speeds topping 200km/h. They are precision instruments engineered for a purpose. Kiwi drift driver Mad Mike Whiddett and his newest - and arguably craziest - addition to his Mazda factory-backed stable of machinery yet, a Mazda MX-5 named RADBUL, is a fine replica of this.

Gary Anderson says he deliberately lost to Adrian Lewis in 2011

World champion Gary Anderson has revealed he deliberately lost a Premier League match against Adrian Lewis at Glasgow's SECC in 2011. Scot Anderson, 44, led the match 3-0 but, with Lewis suffering "disgraceful" abuse, allowed the Englishman to reel off eight legs in a row to secure an 8-3 victory. When asked if he intentionally lost, Anderson told BBC Scotland: "Yes. "I didn't want to win a game where that happened; I thought it was a disgrace."

You probably shouldn’t drive a $1.6 million car around NYC, but we did

Late last month, National Geographic Channel and Uber teamed up to promote a new series on scientific breakthroughs—called, appropriately enough, Breakthrough—and they chose to do it with a fleet of alternative energy vehicles on the streets of Manhattan. Obviously we've got a healthy interest in forward-looking cars here at Ars, so it seemed like a good idea to hop on a train to check out what all the fuss was about.

I Replaced All My Coffee with Weed K-Cups. Here's What Happened

It’s hard to believe a 30-year-old bartender who lives alone and is addicted to Netflix and Playstation smokes pot but hey, it’s the life that chose me. So, when my editor asked if I’d like to “test” a batch of Pot-O-Coffee (we see what you did there), I decided to replace my regular intake of K-Cups with their weed-infused version. I figured it would be just like snacking on a brownie with my daily cup of Joe, but in liquid form. It was not. What happened turned out...
