North Carolina denies Tesla a dealership license
North Carolina denied Tesla Motors’ bid to attain a second dealership license in the state, saying the automaker must go through a third-party dealership group. The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles ruled Friday that Tesla did not meet the requirements to become exempt from state law prohibiting manufacturers from owning dealerships. Tesla had hoped to open a second North Carolina dealership location at its existing gallery and service center in Matthews, N.C., a suburb of Charlotte. The company has one dealership in the state, in Raleigh.

Tesla logs show that Model X driver hit the accelerator, Autopilot didn’t crash into building on its own
Earlier this morning, we reported on a strange Model X accident that ended with the SUV crashing into a building in Irvine, California. Fortunately, no one was severely injured in the accident, but the Model X owner claims that the vehicle accelerated on its own while entering a parking space and the driver was unable to decelerate before it ‘autonomously’ crashed into the building.

Tesla willing to share data to get to autonomy Level 4 faster
Tesla's Elon Musk knows the U.S. government wants solid proof that autonomous cars are much safer than human drivers and has offered to share Tesla data. Level 4 autonomy is the goal, where you get in the car, tell it your destination, and sit back.

A Grain of Salt
A few things need to be cleared up about the supposed safety of Model S suspensions: First, there is no safety defect with the suspensions in either the Model S or Model X. Since we own all of our service centers, we are aware of every incident that happens with our customer cars and we are aware of every part that gets replaced. Whenever there is even a potential issue with one of those parts, we investigate fully. This, combined with extensive durability testing, gives us high confidence in our suspensions. With respect to the car that is discussed in the blog post that led to yesterday’s news (more on the blog post below), the suspension ball joint experienced very abnormal rust. We haven’t seen this on any other car, suggesting a very unusual use case. The car had over 70,000 miles on it and its owner lives down such a long dirt road that it required two tow trucks to retrieve the car. (One to get the car to the highway and one to get it from the highway to the service center.) When we got the car, it was caked in dirt.

Tesla Makes Offer to Acquire SolarCity
Tesla’s mission has always been tied to sustainability. We seek to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable transportation by offering increasingly affordable electric vehicles. And in March 2015, we launched Tesla Energy, which through the Powerwall and Powerpack allow homeowners, business owners and utilities to benefit from renewable energy storage. It’s now time to complete the picture. Tesla customers can drive clean cars and they can use our battery packs to help consume energy more efficiently, but they still need access to the most sustainable energy source that’s available: the sun.

'Tesla Solar' wants to be the Apple store for electricity
Tesla Motors Inc. 's bid to buy the biggest U.S. rooftop solar installer has little to do with selling cars. Rather, it's about solving two of the biggest problems standing in the way of the next solar boom. And perhaps a good deal more.

Electric car pioneer Tesla misses production targets
US electric carmaker Tesla has said it will fall short of its annual shipment targets, sparking worries about its production capabilities. Tesla shipped 14,370 cars in the second quarter, missing its target of 17,000. The missed production goals come at a crucial time for Tesla. The company is still in the headlines after the driver of a Tesla car using self-driving technology died in Florida last month after colliding with a lorry.

Elon Musk to deliver Tesla’s ‘Top Secret Masterplan’ later this week
While most of the world was busy playing Pokeman over the weekend, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter and said that he’s been working on part 2 of Tesla’s somewhat infamous “Top Secret Masterplan.” And because Musk is not one to shy away from a good tease, he added that he may release it as early as this week. The tweet itself is rather concise, but is nonetheless worth getting excited about.

Tesla under investigation for possible breach of securities law, WSJ reports
Tesla is under investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, The Wall Street Journal reported, for a possible securities law breach. What’s at issue is whether the electric vehicle company should have notified shareholders immediately following a fatal accident on May 7 that killed a Tesla Model S owner who was using Autopilot at the time of the crash. A spokesperson for Tesla said that the car company has not yet heard from the SEC regarding this matter.

Master Plan, Part Deux
The first master plan that I wrote 10 years ago is now in the final stages of completion. It wasn't all that complicated and basically consisted of: 1. Create a low volume car, which would necessarily be expensive. 2. Use that money to develop a medium volume car at a lower price. 3. Use that money to create an affordable, high volume car... And... Provide solar power. No kidding, this has literally been on our website for 10 years. The reason we had to start off with step 1 was that it was all I could afford to do with what I made from PayPal. I thought our chances of success were...

Federal regulators says car makers “cannot wait for perfect” on automation
On Friday, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Mark Rosekind told an audience in Detroit, Michigan that car makers “cannot wait for perfect” when it comes to developing and deploying self-driving car technology. The Wall Street Journal reported that Rosekind said automation would “save people’s lives” in a time when auto fatalities have been up 8 percent since 2014. Rosekind’s comments come after a man using Tesla’s autopilot system fatally crashed into a left-turning truck in Florida. The incident is believed to be one of the first involving a car in autonomous mode.

Tesla's entire future depends on the Gigafactory
When you find yourself in the middle of the Nevada desert, on a 100-degree day, you wonder: who in the world would build something here? Elon Musk, of course. And so I’m here in the city of Sparks, outside of Reno, because of Musk’s dream — his "Master Plan" for Tesla, to be specific. He’s staked his entire company (and much of his net worth) on a single, enormous building here: the Gigafactory. Tesla's Gigafactory is perhaps the best example of the literal scale of Elon Musk's ambitions. When the factory is complete, it will be the largest building in the world by footprint and, if all goes according to plan, will eventually...

Elon Musk on Tesla fully autonomous car: ‘What we’ve got will blow people’s minds, it blows my mind… it’ll come sooner than people think’
During a conference call today, Elon Musk talked about Tesla’s progress in level 4 fully autonomous driving and while he didn’t want to make an announcement on the call, he said that it is coming sooner than people think: “What we’ve got will blow people’s minds, it blows my mind …it’ll come sooner than people think.” Musk’s most recent prediction placed the technology being ready in Q4 2017, around the time Model 3 will enter production.

Elon Musk: Tesla’s Model 3 factory could look like an alien warship
For decades, a big trend in manufacturing has been the gradual automation of the factory floor. Robots play a major role in making advanced products today — they're fast, clean and efficient. But Tesla chief executive Elon Musk wants to take this to a whole new level with the factory producing the upcoming, low-cost Model 3, turning "the machine that makes the machine" into an "alien dreadnought." Not literally. The factory isn't going to become self-aware and turn on its masters; after all, Musk is an avowed skeptic of the kind of general artificial intelligence that could enable killer machines.
