ZTE unveils Axon 7s with Snapdragon 821

ZTE extends the life of the Axon 7 even further - there’s a new upgraded version, which sports a Snapdragon 821 chipset (up from the 820). However, it’s not clear if it has 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage like the previous spec bump. Really, that’s all ZTE’s press release says and their website is yet to be updated with the 7s model. We did notice that the speaker grill design has changed, but there’s no info on any changes to the stereo speakers or the Dolby Atmos.

Samsung Galaxy S8 review: ahead of the curve

People "aren’t excited by new phones anymore." That’s the first thing Samsung’s product manager said to me before introducing the company’s new flagship Galaxy S8 last month. He’s not wrong: the modern concept of the smartphone has been around for a decade now, and the differences between devices are exceedingly incremental. It doesn’t help that virtually every smartphone looks the same, too.

Can mobile phones give you a brain tumor? An Italian court just ruled yes.

“Does the radiation from mobile phones increase your chances of getting cancer?” is a question that has abounded since the earliest days of the technology, long before Apple and Google arrived on the scene. But an Italian court has just thrown its weight behind a man who argued that his benign brain tumor was caused by prolonged use of his mobile phone. Fifty-seven-year-old Roberto Romeo told the court that he used a mobile phone for several hours a day at work over the course of 15 years, according to a report by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

It's still difficult to just buy a Google Pixel today, and that's insane

Six months after launch, Google inexplicably still can't keep its phones in stock — and it continues to be a critical flaw with its phone strategy. April 20 marked the six-month anniversary of the Google Pixel going on sale in the Play Store. As was typical for a Google phone launch, they were tough to get ahold of — backorders reached weeks or even months, depending on what model you wanted. Now, six months later, Google inexplicably still can't keep Pixels in stock. Just head to the Google Store right now and see that most configuration combinations aren't available.

Samsung opens US preorders for unlocked Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus

Samsung has opened preorders for the unlocked variety of its new Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus smartphones. The company originally confirmed to The Verge back in March that unlocked versions would be arriving in May, and now Samsung will let you put money down with an availability date of May 31st. As we noted when the Best Buy listings first went live earlier this year, this time frame is about one month earlier than past unlocked Galaxy devices have been made available in the US.

The Essential Phone, brought to us by the person who created Android, is finally ready for the spotlight. It’s an incredibly audacious and ambitious project, with an outlandish screen and the beginnings of a modular ecosystem. Exclusive: This is the OnePlus 5

The image you see at the top of this post is the OnePlus 5, the next smartphone to be launched by OnePlus. The phone, as announced today, will be fully detailed on June 20th. We have corroborated this information with a second source and are highly confident this is an accurate image. This also debunks an earlier alleged live image of the phone, which we can state confidently is not representative of the production device.

Samsung's Screen Fingerprint Tech May Have Brightness Issues

Samsung Electronics may be struggling to embed optical fingerprint readers into mobile display panels due to the fact that the current technology has a tendency to cause brightness imbalance issues, one industry insider said earlier this week. The concept render provided by the source that can be seen above this writing visualizes Samsung’s supposed problem, with the tech giant apparently struggling to balance the brightness of its mobile display panels with integrated fingerprint sensors.

Samsung’s UI fluidity problem needs fixing

The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ are two of the most feature-packed and powerful smartphones released this year. It is powered by a 10nm, 64-bit octa-core processor, 4GB/6GB of RAM, and 64GB of fast UFS 2.1 internal storage. Both chipsets come with powerful GPUs – Mali-G71MP20 in the Exynos 8895 and Adreno 540 in the Snapdragon 835 – that are more than enough to drive those beautiful high-resolution Infinity Displays. The phones ace most of the synthetic benchmarks, be it CPU or GPU related tasks. However, the age-old Samsung problem still exists: UI fluidity.

Sharp is launching a pair of totally bezeless phones in mid-July

Samsung might be calling their near-bezeless Galaxy S8 screen the “Infinity display”, but it might be time to rethink that name, because Sharp is set to launch two devices in mid-July which go to infinity.. and beyond. The Sharp FS8016 and FS8010 (catchy, right?) are a new set of handsets from the manufacturer which manage to make the entire front side of the phone into a single sheet of glass.

Asus quietly reveals the ZenFone 4 Max in Russia, with dual cameras and a massive 5,000mAh battery

Those of you with a good memory may remember the ZenFone 4 name from a few years ago. In 2014, Asus was using screen sizes for its naming convention when it released the ZenFone 4, 5, and 6 with respective display sizes in inches. Following on from last year's ZenFone 3 series of phones, the first in the 2017 ZenFone 4 range has been revealed on Asus' Russian site.

Pixel, Pixel XL and Moto Z discontinued at Rogers and Fido

The 32GB Black Pixel, 32GB/128GB Silver Pixel, and black Moto Z have been discontinued at Fido and Rogers, according to MobileSyrup’s sources. Given the Pixel has almost hit its one-year anniversary and with rumours swirling about the well-received smartphone’s successor, it makes sense for Canadian carriers to begin phasing out the Google-manufactured device. The Pixel XL is tipped to feature a squeezable frame (similar to the HTC U11), an always-on display, and the ability for its screen to adapt to multiple display profiles, including SRGB and Vivid.
