Portugal gets a new government, but probably not for long
Portugal's center-right coalition government began preparing its return to power Friday, but it appeared doomed to a brief mandate as anti-austerity parties vowed to bring it down in the new Parliament's first vote. Incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho started composing his new Cabinet a day after the country's president invited him to form a government following victory in an Oct. 4 general election. The government is expected to be sworn in next week.

Stone house in Portugal
While on a trip to Portugal, Daria Chuvaeva “heard from a local barman about an unusual stone house located in the Fafe Mountains,” she says. Chuvaeva decided to journey to the offbeat dwelling, known as the Casa do Penedo, and this image is the result of her effort. “Even if I got lost a few times, I can say that it was definitely worth it,” she writes. “There was something mysterious in that boulder house, and I took photos of it for a few hours.”

Portugal wants more refugees to help revive dwindling population
Traditionally a country of emigration, Portugal has offered to take up to 10,000 migrants from countries struggling to cope with the influx, to help maintain its own population. Portugal's socialist premier Antonio Costa last week sent letters to Austria, Greece, Italy and Sweden -- countries that have seen refugees arrive in large numbers -- offering to welcome up to 5,800 more refugees in addition to the 4,500 they already...

Portugal Clears the Way for Extradition of Ex-C.I.A. Agent to Italy
A former undercover C.I.A. agent will be handed over to Italy, where she was convicted of taking part in the 2003 kidnapping of an Egyptian cleric in one of the renditions ordered by the George W. Selfie gone wrong fells 126-year-old statue of Portuguese king

The man, whom police did not identify, accidentally toppled Dom Sebastiao's statue after climbing up to its pedestal outside the ornate Rossio railway station in central Lisbon just before midnight on Tuesday.

Portugal ran on renewable energy alone for four days
Last week, Portugal hit a major milestone in its ongoing effort to move to renewable energy. The entire country ran for more than half a week without having to resort to fossil fuels. In the late ’80s, Portugal brought a massive new coal-burning power plant online in Sines, and less than two decades later it was called out by the WWF as being one of the largest producers of CO2 emissions in all of Europe. It ranked 13 on the 2007 “Dirty 30” list.

Portugal’s Example: What Happened After It Decriminalized All Drugs, From Weed to Heroin
As diplomats gather at the United Nations in New York this week to consider the future of global drug policy, one Portuguese official, João Goulão, will likely command attention that far outstrips his country's influence in practically any other area. That's because 16 years ago, Portugal took a leap and decriminalized the possession of all drugs — everything from marijuana to heroin. By most measures, the move has paid off.

Portugal: Fifteen years of decriminalised drug policy
Lisbon, Portugal - Under a flyover of concrete, alongside a road full of afternoon commuters, a group of people flock around a van. One of them, a woman in a colourful summer dress and a golden necklace, looks like she came to see a show at the nearby theatre. However, just like the man in his unwashed jeans in front of her, she is here for her daily dose of methadone. It will get her through the night. "Drugs started when my father brought me to the south of Portugal, to the Algarve, where I met people who were in the scene," the woman tells Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity.
