Ramones Debut Record FINALLY Goes Gold in the US
If you’re making a list of the most influential bands of all time, the Ramones have to be somewhere in the Top 5. Incredibly, though, they never sold a lot of records during their 22 years together. The band was kept alive by touring, merch sales and the occasional licensing deal. Their best-selling record? Ramones Mania, a greatest hit collection which managed to break the the 500,000 mark in the US. That’s their only gold record.

Sasha Frere-Jones: Brian Eno’s Quiet Influence
The genius of Brian Eno is in removing the idea of genius. His method is a rebuke to the assumption that a project can be powered by one person’s intent, or that intent is even worth worrying about. The growing influence of this idea, ironically, makes it difficult to see clearly Eno’s distinct contributions to music: his catalogue of recordings doesn’t completely contain his contribution to the pop canon.

Why Gimmicks in the Music Industry Will Never Die
Earlier this summer, an article regarding Jennifer Lopez pointed out that the singer used to have budgets upward of $1 million for music videos earlier in her career, but her budgets have dropped to one-tenth of that. Lopez was quoted saying, “What great idea can I come up with that costs nothing?” While the Internet has changed the way we share music – in turn changing how music is made – it has allowed everyone to have their 15 minutes of fame.

Mr. Oizo drops maniacal new track
"Bear Biscuit," the latest track from Mr Oizo, should come with a whiplash warning. Opening with an ominous drone, the track explodes into head-banging stupidity, and I mean that in the very best way. For almost three minutes disconnected voices, abrasive fire-alarm squeals, and steroid-injected glitch mosh together in a beautiful demonstration of organized chaos. As the dust settles and a broken-record vocal loop closes out the track, one gets the feeling of being in a post-Godzilla Tokyo; equal parts confusion, terror, and amazement.

2014 is first year ever with ZERO platinum-certified records
While there were certainly a number of great albums you need to have from this year, 2014 will mark the first year since its inception in 1976 that no artist’s album will be certified as platinum from sales. The award is given by the RIAA to mark one million units sold, and with only a few weeks remaining in the year, no album is even remotely close to making the threshold.
