This is why lunar colonies will need to live underground
For decades the thought of colonising the Moon has tantalised scientists and visionaries alike. Various colonies have graced our screens, from the sprawling Moonbase Alpha in Space: 1999 to the compact mining colony in Moon. A lunar colony is arguably the next logical step for mankind. It is our nearest stellar neighbour, a mere 238,000 miles (383,000km) away, which makes resupplying relatively easy. One attraction is the comparatively abundant...

An Artistic Time Capsule Prepares To Hitch A Ride To The Moon
DNA from a genetically modified goat, a spritz of perfume, sculptures so small you need a microscope to see them. They're all headed for the moon. The MoonArk is a sort of eight-inch-tall portrait of humanity, with more than 200 artists and designers contributing to it. There's space reserved for it on one of the privately-funded Moon missions competing for the Google Lunar Xprize. Lowry Burgess, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and the...

Inside Audi's wonderfully improbable project to put a rover on the Moon
Much to the disappointment of space nerds everywhere, man has not stepped foot on the Moon in more than 40 years. Governments have sent expensive robots and satellites to our nearest celestial neighbor, but the Moon remains woefully under-explored. That's why Google and the X Prize foundation teamed up to offer $30 million to the first private enterprise that can soft-land a robot on the surface of the Moon and have it traverse 500 meters of the lunar surface.

NASA Reveals Astronauts Heard Unexplained Music At The Moon
"If you’re behind the moon and hear some weird noise on your radio, and you know you’re blocked from the Earth, then what could you possibly think?" The crew of an Apollo mission to the moon were so startled when they encountered strange music-like radio transmissions coming through their headsets, they didn't know whether or not to report it to NASA, it's been revealed. It was 1969, two months before Apollo 11's historic first...

We could colonize the moon for just $10 billion — and make it happen by 2022
What if I told you there’s no reason we couldn’t set up a small base on the moon by 2022 without breaking the bank? The endeavor would cost about $10 billion, which is cheaper than one U.S. aircraft carrier. Some of the greatest scientists and professionals in the space business already have a plan. NASA’s Chris McKay, an astrobiologist, wrote about it in a special issue of the New Space journal, published just a few weeks ago.

Dramatic change in the moon’s tilt may help us trace the origin of water on Earth
Astronomers have found evidence that the axis that the moon spins around shifted billions of years ago due to changes in the moon's internal structure. The research could help explain the strange distribution of water ice near the lunar poles.... It could also help us pinpoint craters that have been shadowed for so long that they contain water ice from early in the solar system. By Mahesh Anand.

Apollo 11 Training – Interesting Pictures of the Astronauts Practicing the Moon Landing in 1969
Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins had already spent months in training as the backup crew for Apollo 8 when, on Jan. 9, 1969, they were named as the crew for Apollo 11, the first mission to land men on the moon. The three had six months to practice every action of their mission over and over again, from retrieving samples of the lunar surface to stepping on and off the ladder of the lunar module.

Research helps explain formation of ringed crater on the moon
Using data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission, scientists have shed new light on the formation of a huge bull's-eye-shaped impact feature on the Moon. The findings, described in two papers published in the journal Science, could help scientists better understand how these kinds of giant impacts influenced the early evolution of the Moon, Mars and Earth.
