How my Kickstarter blew up my life

In October 2014, I raised nearly $150,000 on my first crowdfunding campaign. Three months later, when I was in my final year of college and 21 years old, I wished I’d never heard of Kickstarter. I’d committed the cardinal sin of crowdfunding by shipping a shit product to over 2,500 people who’d backed my campaign. It’s now March 2016, and my backers are back to being huge supporters. I’ve built a thriving business and somehow...

Kickstarter’s Biggest Shitshow Somehow Got Even Messier

A decidedly not chill development for 36,000 Kickstarter backers of the “Coolest Cooler”: Coolest is now considering asking people who haven’t yet received their coolers to pay an additional $97 for “expedited delivery” of the long-past-due all-in-one disaster, a prospect that has allegedly led some backers to threaten Coolest employees. If you’re not familiar, at the time it launched, the Coolest Cooler was the most popular Kickstarter of all time...

The Darkest Day: The Mysterious Drama of Dark Day Interactive

It was a warm summer day late in 2013, typical for the upside down Australia. Halfway across the globe, far to the north, it was an equally typical nippy day in jolly England. Two men, Mark Hann from Australia, and Matt Venner from Britain came together and found Inactive Pixel Studios. From these humble beginnings are planted the seeds of lies, drama, Kickstarter scams, asset flips, and allegations of fraud .

Kickstarter Crap - LICKI, Tail Topper, Roodie

The latest iteration of the idubbbzTV series "Kickstarter Crap" focuses on projects for cat owners. He breaks down the projects, showing their absurdity (Not like the projects in this episode needed much help in that department though). P.S: He swears a lot, but I didn't know if that warrants making it NSFW

From virtual communities to real-life enterprises … How Kickstarter generated more than $5bn

The Fed Ex guy is always delivering intriguing parcels to Mini Museum’s headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, but he’s never allowed to see what’s inside. On Wednesday, it was something very cool from Norway, co-founder Jamie Grove explains – though he can’t say any more. But Mini Museum has the fascinating, rare and bizarre delivered every day; it’s a unique startup that collects scientific and historic artefacts from around the universe, meticulously divides them and presents them encased in clear acrylic as a “mini museum”.

This levitating phone charger can power your iPhone in mid air

Your phone isn't doing anything interesting while its charging, but a Canadian design company called AR Design wants to change that by making your phone float and spin in the air while it charges. The levitating wireless phone charger is currently undergoing its Kickstarter campaign and is getting close to its $31,000 goal. Most of the early-bird packages are gone, but you can still snag one for under $200 right now.

This tiny device can record everything you say and transcribe it for you

Senstone may be one of the world's smallest wearables — and perhaps one of the most useful. The tiny device has one function: to help you keep track of your ideas, to-do lists, and notes while you're on the go. Senstone records voice memos, uploads them to an app, and transcribes them for you. The device is launching on Kickstarter Tuesday with the goal of raising $50,000, but I got an early version of the Senstone to try out for myself.

How to make Gold Edition Apple Watch from any Apple Watch (Video)

The tech world is completely aghast at the price of the gold Apple Watch Edition, which starts at $10,000 but would cost you even more if you plan on buying it. The pricing is baking everyone’s noodles. It’s so hard for us to understand how can this edition cost so much more than the basic one when the only difference it’s in the design. This is not how tech works.

Little Orbit CEO On Delivering Unsung Story: "We're Not Asking Anyone To Have Blind Faith In Us"

As we reported earlier this week, developer Playdek abandoned the Yasumi Matsuno-involved Kickstarter Unsung Story and sold it to publisher Little Orbit. Not being known for games like Unsung Story, or non-licensed games in general, the move was odd and raised a lot of questions about the future of the $600,000 Kickstarted tactical RPG. We reached out to Little Orbit to try and fill in some of the blanks.

    Consumer scepticism drives Kickstarter decline

You know what everyone forgets about the story of the boy who cried wolf? In the end, there actually was a wolf - a ravenous, man-eating wolf. It's as much a parable about the dangers of ignoring credible threats just because the present situation is rosy, as it is about the social ills of sending bored teenage boys up lonely hillsides in the era before they could stream high-definition porn over LTE.

Alleged Kickstarter Scam Confederate Express Has Returned

Back in 2013, 2386 backers pledged a total of $39,739 via Kickstarter to a company called Kilobite to create a dystopian tactical RPG called Confederate Express. The game boasted a unique method of post-processing powered by tech known as the “False2D” API, which could “[simulate] 3D conditions in 2D environments.” A tech demo showing off this technology was made available alongside the Kickstarter campaign.

    "Frank." isn’t just a phone, it’s a phony

The Android enthusiast community has always been hungry for phones that offer a flagship experience at a low cost. That's why people still mourn Google's Nexus program a year later, despite numerous hardware problems over the years (I should know, my 5 and 5X both died unexpectedly after about a year). And despite OnePlus' many misfires over the years, the company's phones are still praised.

It's not ok for billion-dollar companies to crowdfund

Crowdfunding has traditionally been a platform where the little guys go to get a leg up. Creators get the chance to share their ideas, and we’re able to do something positive if we like what we see. We chip in, take a little leap of faith, and maybe see something realised that wouldn’t have otherwise been possible. But, what about when a large corporation steps in to get a slice?

Battery-free toothbrush is powered with a twist

Battery-powered toothbrushes are convenient if you don't like brushing your teeth the old-fashioned way, but they have a catch: batteries. Typically, you either need to dock your brush (and remember to carry a charger with you on long trips) or toss disposables when they're done. There might be a better way soon, though: Goodwell Co. is crowdfunding Be, which it bills as the first battery-free powered toothbrush. Twist the base twice and a kinetic energy storage mechanism will vibrate the brush head for up to 2 minutes...

For $500, this ‘breathing’ robot might help you sleep better

There are so many things that could go wrong when you’re sleeping with a robot. Your partner might freak out in a burst of 21st century jealousy. Or you could accidentally push the robot off the edge of the bed and smash it into a million pieces. In my case, the robot woke me up at 5AM saying “goodnight” in Dutch and started breathing.

Iron Harvest, the RTS about farmers and mechs in the 1920s, is a Kickstarter success

Iron Harvest is an upcoming RTS set in a 1920s we never actually experienced, with giant, steam-driven war-bots and farmers earning fortunes digging up the "iron harvest" of weapons, ammunition, and shrapnel left behind by the First World War. We got a brief look at it in December when developer King Art Games released a trailer showcasing the game's dynamic, destructible cover and said a 1v1 multiplayer mode would be out in the spring. Now the studio has taken the project to Kickstarter in search of funding to support the creation of single-player campaigns.

Someone raised over $100,000 to make a wooden 'thinking egg' on Kickstarter

A wooden egg… why didn't I think of that? Where I come from, people will willingly fork over $20 for a two-ingredient dish consisting of bread and an avocado — which literally grow on trees around here (Southern California). So it's hard to make fun of a $13 egg handcrafted from wood, brass, or stone that's meant to serve as a reminder to chill the f--k out.

‘Star Citizen’ Court Documents Reveal the Messy Reality of Crowdfunding a $200 Million Game

Back in 2012, developer Roberts Space Industries (RSI) launched a Kickstarter asking for money to fund Star Citizen—an ambitious space game in the mold of Wing Commander. It’s 2018, and while parts of the game are playable in various forms, it's far from achieving what it set out to accomplish. So far, it’s collected more than $200 million in funding from fans eager to play it. Ken Lord was one of those fans, and an early backer of Star Citizen. He’s got a Golden Ticket, a mark on his account that singles him out as an early member of the community.
