The Iowa Senate, however, has denied my repeated requests to perform a similar invocation. In so doing, not only is the Senate directly discriminating against me, it is violating the Constitution, which protects all faiths equally. In its upcoming session, the Senate faces a stark choice: Continue to limit religious freedom or protect it for all Iowans.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder in the killing of a former Iowa State University student-athlete who was found dead Monday at an Ames, Iowa, golf course, police said. Collin Daniel Richards, who authorities said has no known address, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Celia Barquin Arozamena, Ames police said late Monday night.

FBI joins search for missing University of Iowa student
The FBI is joining Iowa officials in the search of a 20-year-old University of Iowa student who has been missing from her eastern Iowa hometown for nearly a week. Mollie Tibbetts, of Brooklyn, Iowa, went missing last week while reportedly staying at her boyfriend's home. Volunteer searches for Tibbetts were called off this week as the FBI and state investigators took over, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation spokesman Mitch Mortvedt said Tuesday.

A baby girl is hospitalized after being hit on the head by a softball. McKenna Hovenga, 7-weeks-old, was hit while her dad was playing in Shell Rock, Iowa. She is now being treated at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., according to the Waverly Courier. She has a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. She has suffered several seizures, according to a Facebook page set up by her aunt.

The Iowa Supreme Court upheld the felony conviction Friday of a man who tricked a woman into having sex with him by convincing her through social media that he was an old high school friend. Michael Kelso-Christy, 23, had argued that Iowa law doesn't outlaw sex by fraud or deception, but he was eventually convicted of burglary, a charge that also can include entering a home with intent to commit sexual abuse.

US family found dead in Mexican resort
A family of four from Iowa have been found dead inside their rented holiday home in Mexico, authorities say. The Sharp family had been expected to attend a basketball game in Illinois on Wednesday. A missing person report was filed after they did not show up. The incident took place in the popular resort of Tulum, according to the Mexico Tourism Board.

Iowa Senate Passes Traffic Camera Ban
The Iowa Senate Tuesday passed a bill to ban traffic cameras in the state, with mostly Republicans voting in favor of the measure. Democrats offered several amendments that would allow traffic cameras when justified by data, and allow speed cameras near schools and road construction zones. Sen. Brad Zaun (R-Urbandale), the bill’s author, urged his Republican colleagues to vote down the amendments because he says they would change the intent of the bill. Zaun says traffic cameras violate the Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

As friends and family in Nebraska mourn the death of Sydney Loofe, residents of an Iowa farm town are mystified that a one-time star athlete from there is involved in the tragic and bizarre case. Bailey Boswell, 23, is one of two “persons of interest” being held for questioning in the death of Loofe, who disappeared after going on a date with Boswell on Nov. 15. The date was arranged through the online dating service Tinder.

Iowa parents charged after baby found rotting in swing
Authorities have charged an Iowa couple with murder in the death of their 4-month-old son, whose maggot-infested body was found in a baby swing in the family's home. Twenty-year-old Cheyanne Harris and 28-year-old Zachary Koehn were arrested Wednesday on charges of child endangerment and first-degree murder in the death of their son, Sterling Koehn. Court records don't list attorneys for either of them. Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 2.

The owners of a giant rabbit named Simon who was found dead after a United Airlines flight demanded on Monday that the airline pay damages, order an outside investigation and re-evaluate how it handles animals on flights. Attorneys for Simon's owners, who purchased him in hopes of winning the title of world's largest rabbit at the Iowa State Fair this summer, said they would take legal action if United failed to respond within seven days.

Two Iowa police officers killed in ‘ambush-style attacks.’ Manhunt underway in Des Moines area.
A man suspected of killing two police officers sitting in their squad cars in central Iowa was taken into custody Wednesday, according to authorities. In the hours after he was taken into custody, a picture began to emerge of Scott Michael Greene, 46, through court records, police statements and social media postings. On at least two occasions — including one just weeks before the shootings — Greene apparently was involved in tense, racially-infused confrontations.
