Want to keep your million-dollar luxury pad in Vancouver empty? Get ready to pay $10,000 (US$7,450) annually in extra taxes. Lie about it? That’ll be $10,000 a day in fines. Canada’s most-expensive property market, suffering from a near-zero supply of rental homes, announced the details of a new tax aimed at prodding absentee landlords into making their properties available for lease. The empty-home tax will take effect by Jan. 1 and will be calculated at one per cent of the property’s assessed value, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson told reporters at City Hall.

Rent doubles in one day at NE Portland apartments
Families in Northeast Portland are facing a rent hike that could price them out of their homes. The Normandy Apartments on Northeast Killingsworth Street have been home to the Bautista family for more than a decade. They planned to live there for years to come, but now they may have to move. “It’s really hard on everyone in the community,” said Bautista. “You don’t just kick us out like that.” Bautista says not too long ago First Class Property Management notified her mom of a rent hike.

Measures introduced Thursday by the Ontario government to cool the hot housing market – including a 15 per cent foreign buyers’ tax – are not expected to hurt the mortgage books of the country’s big banks. But mortgage growth at the Big Six banks could be curbed, and analysts and other industry watchers also suggested unintended consequences could hit other consumer lending portfolios within the banks.
