What is sperm donation all about?

Sperm donation

In simple terms, sperm donation is when a male partner gives or donates his emission or semen (the liquid or fluid) having sperm which comes out during expulsion- so that a childless couple or individual can be bestowed with a baby. The sperm is then implanted into woman’s birth canal or can also be used to germinate mature eggs into a laboratory. The use of donated sperm is also called third-party reproduction. Then the sperms are checked for how good they are at thawing process. Many sperms don’t that, which means they are good for IVF and not for IUI. The donor sperms can be put into two groups, one which is suited for IVF and other for IUI.

How can the two be differentiated?

*Number and configuration *It is essential for the specimen of IUI to be good swimmers. *On the other hand, specimens of IVF have to be less in number and their knowledge or not knowing swimming doesn’t matter.

Why is less number of Sperms required in IVF?

VF and donor sperm

IVF has to happen outside the body, so that there is the minimum distance between sperm, to swim and also to keep enough sperm closer to the egg.

IUI and Donor Sperm

The sperms are required to be very good in “swimming”, they have to go all the way to fallopian tube to look for the egg. The type of “swimming” done by sperm is equal to that of crossing an ocean by an athlete. The shape of the sperm is also very essential; it has to be correct for getting tied up with egg. The head of sperm comes in various shapes and constitutions, even if they are filled with the right stuff into them, they still cannot transport the packing when they are out of shape.

We can give sperm a little assist during an IVF treatment – so we only need an average swimming sperm, they don’t have to have a perfect shape, and we don’t need many of them. Whereas IUI requires lots of sperm Sperms can be assisted throughout IVF treatment - hence a ‘champion in swimming ‘ is a must, out of shape, not to worry, a lesser number, no worries. But in IUI you do need lots of sperms. In case you want more help on the same you can contact any IVF centre.
