Byton enters the electric vehicle foray with stunning ‘Concept’
Byton, a Chinese start-up has revealed its upcoming all-electric SUV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The design is bold and futuristic, but its whats inside that takes the cake. The interior is designed with the tech-savvy in mind with loads of information on a gigantic 40 inch “Shared Experience Display” screen that spans the whole width of the dashboard. This allows both the driver and passenger to control and configure their own “zones.” The front seats can also swivel towards the center by 12 degrees to allow passengers a clear view of this massive screen as well.

Porsche Doubles Its Electric Car Investment
Porsche is making a big bet on electric cars, with the upcoming Mission E representing the first full-electric car from the German automaker. Now, Porsche plans to double its investment in electric cars to nearly $8 billion by 2022. What will that extra money be used for? First, Porsche will use it to produce the Mission E as well as variants of the model. The money will also be used to hybridize and electrify the lineup, which likely means that there will be a hybrid 911 down the line. There will also be investment in factories, infrastructure, and everyone's favorite word combination, smart mobility.

Report: Tesla battery reignited days after fiery crash in Mountain View
Six days after a fiery crash on Highway 101 involving a Tesla Model X took the life of a 38-year-old San Mateo man, the car’s high-voltage lithium-ion battery re-ignited while sitting in a tow yard, according to the Mountain View Fire Department. The revelation was included in a safety memo written last month by Mountain View Fire Chief Juan Diaz, and first reported Wednesday by KTVU2.

Uber is paying its drivers to go fully electric
Uber is launching a new pilot program to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles across its US fleet, according to a recent blog post by the company. The EV Champions Initiative will provide “direct monetary incentives” to drivers willing to using EVs (electric vehicles) to carry passengers instead of petrol or diesel vehicles. Uber drivers are required to own – or at least lease – the vehicles they use for rides, so they'll have to choose to make the switch to electric themselves rather than simply receive a new company car.

Half of young people want electric cars
Half of young people in the UK would like to own an electric car – compared with just a quarter of their parents, a survey suggests. The research comes from motoring group the AA, which says myths about electric vehicles are putting off many drivers. This matters because cleaning up air pollution and tackling climate change both depend on mass ownership of electric vehicles (EVs).

China Now Makes More Electric Cars Than Every Country COMBINED
To make sense of this direction, take a look at this year’s Beijing Auto Show. The event displayed 1,022 models, 174 of which were new energy vehicles. Of those cars, 124 were produced by Chinese companies. That’s seven Chinese for every 10 electric vehicles — and the fact that China has become the largest EV market in the world goes beyond a single event.

Could 'rust' hold key to electric travel?
Scottish scientists have developed a liquid battery which could charge electric cars in seconds. A team at the University of Glasgow has created a prototype system that could revolutionise travel. The technology uses a metal oxide - described by researchers as an "exotic rust" - that can be charged with electricity when added to water.

Electric cars could store energy in their carbon fiber bodies
You might not need a big, heavy battery to power an EV. Electric cars typically need larger, denser batteries if they're going to meet the range expectations of people used to gas-powered vehicles, but available space and weight limit the size of that battery. Researchers might have a solution: turn the very body of the car into a battery. They've conducted a study showing that carbon fiber shells could serve as battery electrodes. The trick is to optimize the size and orientation of the fibers so there's a good balance between stiffness and the electrochemical traits needed to store energy.

Here’s How Electric Cars Will Get a Fast Wireless Charge
For the first time ever, scientists at the Oak Ridge Laboratory have came up with a 120-kilowatt wireless technology that charges batteries at 97 percent efficiency over a 6-inch gap. At this point, the lab claims, the new wireless charger is almost as efficient as the high speed wired chargers that Tesla uses for its cars.

Beyond Tesla: Here's What's Coming in Electric Vehicles
Tesla's sleek, upscale electric vehicles have captured a wide audience -- wide enough that traditional makers of luxury vehicles are feeling the need to compete directly with the Silicon Valley upstart. At the same time, Tesla has inspired other start-up electric-vehicle makers, some of whom are aiming for the same market that Tesla has so far had for itself. On top of that, the mainstream automakers are drawing inspiration from Tesla as they design their own electric vehicles for the mass market.
