Brits urged not to report Dubai crimes after 'gang-raped' woman arrest
A charity is advising UK nationals not to report rapes to the Dubai police after a sex attack victim was arrested when she went to the authorities for help. The 25-year-old woman was locked up by police after telling them she had been gang-raped by two British men in a Dubai hotel room. She has reportedly been released on bail but had her passport confiscated and could face charges of having extra-marital sex. Radha Stirling, the founder of Detained in Dubai, told the Independent that Dubai police assumed Western women were "looking for it".

Limited edition Abu Dhabi No 1 plate sells for Dh31 million
A No 1 limited edition licence plate commemorating Abu Dhabi Government’s Golden Jubilee was sold to an Emirati for Dh31 million on Saturday at Emirates Palace hotel. The winning bidder for the coveted plate, Abdullah Al Mahri, 32, said he bought it in honour of the country’s Rulers, who worked tirelessly to make the UAE No 1 in the world. "I’m very proud to get No 1, especially for this golden jubilee, 50 years of the Abu Dhabi Government. I’m very proud and I’m very happy," Mr Al Mahri said.

Crime Prediction software joins Dubai Police Force

Given that system's reliance on humans with precognitive abilities, we're unlikely to see it in the real world, but machine learning algorithms are already aiding police forces around the world identify crime hotspots with the goal of preventing crimes before they occur.

United Arab Emirates to invest $163bn in renewables
The United Arab Emirates has said that it intends to invest $163bn (£134bn) in projects to generate half of the nation's power needs from renewables. The major oil producing Gulf state is hoping to get close to this by 2050 and says it wants to balance economic needs against environmental goals. The UAE has considerable solar power potential and is eager to reduce its use of fossil fuels.

Bahrain executes three Shiites over police killings
Bahrain on Sunday executed three men found guilty of killing three policemen, in a move likely to further raise tensions between the country's Shiite majority and its Sunni rulers. The three Shiite men faced the firing squad, six days after a court upheld their death sentences over a bomb attack in March 2014, the prosecutor's office said in a statement carried by BNA state news agency. The executions came a day after demonstrations broke out across Shiite villages following rumours that the authorities were going to carry out the death sentences.

Dubai is buying 200 Tesla vehicles as it looks to become a leader in the self-driving-car space. Tesla will supply 200 Model S and Model X vehicles to the Dubai Taxi Corporation's fleet, according to The National, a UAE-owned, English-language newspaper. Tesla CEO Elon Musk inked the deal with the Roads and Transport Authority at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Monday.

The world's first rotating skyscraper will let residents spin their apartments
The world’s first rotating skyscraper is set to be built in Dubai by 2020. The Dynamic Tower Hotel has been planned since 2008, having been proposed by Israeli-Italian architect David Fisher. It will stand at 1,375 feet tall, with each of its 80 storeys capable of rotating individually around a concrete core, offering 360-degree views of Dubai. Residents will be able to control rotation speeds and stop their apartment from spinning with voice commands.

Not content with having the world's tallest building and biggest shopping centre, Dubai has become the first city to get its own Microsoft-designed font. The typeface comes in both Latin and Arabic script, and will be available in 23 languages. Government bodies have been told to use it in official correspondence. But given the human rights record of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, eyebrows will be raised at claims it is a font of "self-expression".

A British man facing a possible three-year jail sentence in Dubai over claims that he touched a man on the hip in a bar has in the meantime been sentenced to a month in jail for making a rude gesture and drinking alcohol.
