Literacy Not A Right For Detroit School Kids According To State
Detroit school children have no fundamental right to literacy, according to Gov. Rick Snyder’s attorneys, in the midst of a suit claiming the poor reading skills of Detroit students at five schools, deplorable building conditions, and lack of basic classroom necessities are the fault of the state. Ford cancels plans to build plant in Mexico, will invest in Michigan
Ford announced today plans to cancel a $1.6-billion plant in Mexico and to invest $700 million in metro Detroit's Flat Rock Assembly plant. "We are today announcing that we are investing $700 M to transform Flat Rock into a new manufacturing & innovation center," Ford CEO Mark Fields said at a press conference held this morning at the plant.

Detroit Officers Acquitted in Theft Case, Can Return to Work
Detroit's police chief says two members of an elite police unit can return to work after being acquitted of stealing money from people they stopped on the street. A jury acquitted Officers Charles Lynem and Chancellor Searcy this week. Chief James Craig tells WXYZ-TV there will be a transition period for the officers before they return to the streets. They had been suspended without pay. Lynem and Searcy were partners in Detroit's Tactical Response Unit.

Dog found in Detroit with nose, ears, tail cut off is cleared to go to forever home
A dog that was found abandoned in the streets of Detroit with its nose, ears and tail cut off has been cleared to go to his forever home, the Michigan Humane Society announced Friday. Baron underwent 2 1/2 hours of successful reconstructive surgery on Feb. 8 to protect his nasal passage and shorten and suture his tail. The veterinary team said he "came through with flying colors." The reward for information on who abandoned and mutilated Baron has increased to $40,000.

EPA gives Flint $100M to help repair pipes
The Environmental Protection Agency said Friday it is awarding a $100 million emergency grant to Michigan to fund infrastructure upgrades in Flint, where lead-contaminated water damaged service lines. Detroit has $63M surplus, deficit free two years in a row
The city of Detroit ended the 2016 fiscal year with a $63 million surplus, marking its second consecutive balanced budget out of bankruptcy, an achievement officials hope will earn it better standing in the bond markets and a path out of financial oversight. The city’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, publicly released Wednesday, also shows that for the first time in more than a decade, the city didn’t have any costs scrutinized for its federal grant use. The city filed the annual review of its finances with the state Treasury Department on Tuesday.
