[Downtime] This evening our servers were overwhelmed by a massive surge in traffic

Snapzu experienced a considerable surge in traffic that overwhelmed our database servers and caused a chain reaction that ultimately brought the site down at 7:45 pm PST. We would like to welcome all the new people with open arms and thank you for hugging us to death!

Now that we are back up we will be working on removing additional bottleneck areas that caused the downtime in the first place, as well as upgrading our DB servers to handle a larger work load.

Thanks everyone for being so patient!

Snapzu is being talked about all over reddit, outside of the invite threads, so I'm going to guess that this won't be the first massive surge in traffic.

On a completely separate note, any word on the API? A lot of people are asking about an android app.

Yeah and I saw some that critisied us for being down saying that it was a "Bad First Impressioin". Pth, don't want them anyhow... such negativity :/

I like Snapzu and so far everything seems more civil. I don't think it, or any other Reddit alternatives, knew this would happen and how quickly people would be jumping ship to try something else.

Not really Snapzu's fault that the servers went down. Glad you got it back up again!

Reddit users have been there a while, and that means that they have been on a website that is barley down for over five minutes. This means that any wait longer than that is going to make people who are used to it never happening are going to complain. While I love the idea of getting new users, I also can see the next few weeks being slow.

Maybe that'll weed impatient, less-civil people out of the mix as they go off somewhere else.

I really enjoy the Snapzu community, so far.

I am also very interested in an android app. Didn't see one earlier when I checked.

I came here from Reddit, you guys are going to have problems for days.

I love the layout here, absolutely amazing

It's one of the things that first attracted me to the site. Felt like I was finally out of the mid 2000s.

Definitely my favorite layout that I saw while searching for a new home.

Is there anything similar to a 'dark theme' for Snapzu by any chance?

There was an unofficial one created by a member, but it looks like it was abandoned. Nothing official from the Snapzu team.

I think we weathered the FPH exodus fairly well (can't really say as I'm not sitting behind consoles watching machines burn while spooling up new VM's). But I agree, I think that with every passing day that the main subreddits stay private and new ones join them, Reddit will become a ghost town. Personally, I'd be spooling up like a bank of nodes and looking into expanding a CDN / regional nodes just incase things explode.

I really like the design of the site, will take some getting used to but I can already see how much better it is.

Yes, I agree, the layout is awesome. On Reddit, I see Voat is being recommended the most as a Reddit alternative and /r/voat itself has had some really popular posts lately, but I am not a big fan of the design. I appreciate that it is Reddit without badmins (so far), but I am looking for something that isn't just a clone of Reddit's aesthetics with slight improvements in functionality. Snapzu seems to fulfill that desire.

It's really no surprise I'm getting followed by literally hordes of users. Just look at this shit: http://gfycat.com/ArtisticMeanGavial

You are one of the popular kids. How long till #Fallow4Fallow becomes a thing?

I already try to follow any user that follows me. I can only see the last 30 minutes now, so I'm sure I have missed a few. To say the least.

I'm being followed by almost a thousand people now! And just in 12 hours or so. I'm dumbfounded.

I think I broke the F5 key on my keyboard. Was starting to sweat, not sure how much longer I could have lasted.

Thanks for the welcome- I'm also "from Reddit" and have been interested in a while to find a new home. This layout is pretty great and to throw my voice in the mix- I'd also make good use of an Android app to replace one I've been using that has this little alien thing. ;-)

All in all, I'm rather hype about the downtime as it means we're going to be getting a lot of new members. This pleases me greatly, as I really enjoy the content on the site. New blood would be rather nice.

Pfff, what downtime, I barely noticed.

If you ever need help and advice on scaling, send me a PM and I'll see if I can help (not so much trying to get in on the team, more just if you want to run an idea or problem by me to see if I can give any advice). Hate seeing that CI db error popping up from time to time.

No surprise there, a lot of Reddit alternatives also were unreachable. People just needed a place to go to while Reddit is down I guess.

When Snapzu went down, I was actually pretty happy! It means more people are going to come around, and to them, I say welcome!

That said, crashing is indeed something that shouldn't happen often, heh. It's awesome to see steps are being taken to prevent them!

Yeah. I was going to create my new tribe, and then the influx happened. Oh well, time to get it started now.
