Did Iconic Archaeopteryx Lose Its Ability to Fly?
Although it has long been debated whether the proto-bird Archaeopteryx was able to actually fly or merely evolving toward that ability, to date nobody had yet seriously suggested that it could have been instead in the midst of losing its ability to fly. But that is precisely what Michael Habib, a biologist at the University of Southern California proposed last week to a packed hall at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Los Angeles.

How Giant Birds Can Fly Nearly 10,000 Miles in One Go
These world travelers are among the largest flying birds, weighing up to 25 pounds (11 kilograms), and with a wingspan of 11 feet (3 meters). But hefting such huge bodies off the ground takes a lot of energy. If albatrosses flew simply by flapping their wings, they would lose about half their body mass fueling that kind of flight.

Crow Brains Reveal Secrets of Their Intelligence
Crows are well known for their intelligence. In fact, the entire Corvidae family is renowned for being the smartest of all birds and some of the smartest of all animals. The secret to their superior intellect has been located in their brain for the first time, according to a new study from Lena Veit and Andreas Nieder from the Institute of Neurobiology at the University of Tübingen.

Crows could be the key to understanding alien intelligence
Crows are among the planet's most intelligent animals, teaching their young to use tools for foraging and banding together to fight off intruders. Now, the first study of how abstract reasoning works in these birds' brains could shed light on how intelligence works in a truly alien, non-mammal brain.

Why do birds fly in a V?
Birds discovered V-formation flight long before fighter pilots did, but the exact reasons why they make these distinctive shapes in the sky has remained a mystery. Now scientists working with a critically endangered bird have discovered the avians' remarkable secret: They surf on one another’s air currents by synchronizing their wing beats with the bird in front of them.

'Falcon cam' reveals how the birds of prey close in for the kill
Scientists have strapped tiny video cameras to the heads and backs of falcons to learn how the birds hunt their prey. Footage from the on-bird cameras revealed the strategy the predators used in flight as they chased down crows and closed in for the kill. Rather than head straight for their target, the falcons kept their quarry in a fixed position to one side, allowing them to close in on the prey in the stealthiest way possible.

Crow and seagull attack Pope's doves
Two white doves released by children standing alongside Pope Francis in Vatican City as a peace gesture have been attacked by other birds. A seagull and a crow swept down on the doves after they were set free from the Apostolic Palace during the Pope's weekly Angelus prayer. Tens of thousands of people watched as one dove struggled to break free. But the crow pecked repeatedly at the other dove. It is not clear what happened to the doves that flew away.
