Lost Zelda screenshot reveals NES classic was almost in first-person with a dungeon select screen
Nintendo might have rewritten the book on open-ended design, but recent discoveries show that this almost wasn’t the game. The Hyrule Encylopedia has uploaded a long-lost screenshot from before the game was released, and the early build shows a much different game. For one, it was a first-person exploration game, more similar to Might and Magic or Etrian Odyssey for today’s audiences. The genre was very popular back then in Japan, and Nintendo very well might have been trying to capitalize on that popularity.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Beginning VS. End
For most Zelda games, the progression is pretty linear. As Link moves forward in the story, he gains more tools, his lifebar grows and maybe picks up a bottle or two here or there. But since Breath of the Wild is such a huge departure for the series, things look and feel much different when you begin your adventure and especially when you head into the endgame. This is the sort of thing we're talking about...

This is the Police (Xbox One) Review
If you have ever found yourself wishing that you could manage a corrupt police station set in a fiction 1980’s city where racism, sexism and the mafia rule, well, This is the Police is very likely the game for you. I want to point out that many of the things in that previous paragraph are not seen as positives. In This is the Police, they just exist. They are a part of the world in which a relatively straight edge cop needs to re-evaluate his morality as the end of his career unexpectedly approaches.

Teardown firm: Joy-Con controllers cost Nintendo $90 to manufacture
Last week, Japanese teardown firm Fomalhaut released their analysis on what it cost to manufacture a Switch console: $257. Now they’ve released a more detailed list of the component costs for the console, and there’s one big surprise. According to Fomalhaut, the two Joy-Con controllers cost Nintendo $90 to manufacture, which would mean that Nintendo is selling the controllers at a loss (MSRP is $79). Their reason for the high Joy-Con costs is that they include lots of small parts (20 parts per controller), and that they include lots of intricate technology.

Zelda Fan Game Turns Breath of the Wild Prototype Into Thing You Can Play
Earlier this year, Nintendo showed off a 2D version of Zelda that it used to conceptualize some of the mechanics in Breath of the Wild. It was cool! No surprise, then, that a fan decided to recreate that prototype so that anyone could play it.

The Pokémon Company Celebrates 19-Year Anniversary
This year may be the year of Kirby according to the last Nintendo Direct, but I have an inkling which franchise will be in the spotlight next year. The Pokémon Company was founded on 23 April 1998, making this week its 19th anniversary. Contrary to popular belief, the Pokémon Company isn’t entirely owned by Nintendo – something that came to light when people realised Nintendo did not make, and made little money directly from insanely popular app Pokémon Go.

Video Games Are Better Without Stories
A longstanding dream: Video games will evolve into interactive stories, like the ones that play out fictionally on the Star Trek Holodeck. In this hypothetical future, players could interact with computerized characters as round as those in novels or films, making choices that would influence an ever-evolving plot. It would be like living in a novel, where the player’s actions would have as much of an influence on the story as they might in the real world.

Xbox chief: we need to create a Netflix of video games
Something big has happened to the video game industry over the last five years – you may have noticed. All the old rules about consoles – the fact that they enjoyed five-to-eight-year life cycles, the fact that games “just worked” out of the box – they’re all gone. An accelerating consumer electronics sector and the mass penetration of broadband internet have led us into a new era of chaotic innovation and fraught business model evolution. And somewhere in the middle of all this, people are making and playing games. How do those people keep up?

Analyst: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is “no ordinary hit”, is a bigger success than sales indicate
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had a very successful launch on the Switch, selling 459,000 units on launch day in the US, making it the fastest selling Mario Kart game ever. And Jefferies equity analyst Atul Goyal believes the game’s success is more than just sales numbers, it shows the Switch as a viable console.
