This is easily the best dating simulator I've played, though my knowledge of the genre is not extensive, and really what it boils down to is some great writing. The other elements are there too of course, the art and the music are very good, the interface does its job without getting in your way, and so on. It takes something special, though, to get me to care about the dating lives of a bunch of high schoolers.

Every character in this has some sort of disability - blind / deaf / heart condition / etc. The gimmick is kind of silly, but they deal with it well and it winds up being a big part of what rounds out the characters.

I should note that there's nudity in this. You can turn it off in the options if you're against that sort of thing. On the other hand, if you're not against that sort of thing and are hoping for porn you may be disappointed - there's a lot of game to play through before anyone takes their clothes off.

[win/mac/linux] Katawa Shoujo - a visual novel (dating simulator) with a bizarre development history which manages, somehow, to be great

Katawa Shoujo was developed over a period of six years by a bunch of... random volunteers from 4chan. The group called themselves Four Leaf Studios (because 4chan's logo has four leaves) and this is their one and only game.

[win] Iji - story-based exploration sidescroller

Some people would call this a Metroidvania game. I wouldn't, but I can see why people would call it that. There's a heavy story component here, and a pretty bleak one, in addition to some solid platforming. This is another game with a lot of substance to it, which requires a good amount of time. Also, a control pad. Not technically required, but strongly suggested.

I learned about snapzu from the reddit nonsense, but I'm here for one big reason: link summaries. I always hated that reddit let you post a link with a title, but then if you had anything to say about it you had to dump it in the comments. I don't want to have to click on every link just to see what it's about.

First off: do not confuse this with Dungeon Defenders, with an s. That is a 3D multiplayer game with some vaguely tower defense styled trappings, and which has gotten a lot of press. This is a straight tower defense game, done in flash, which never got any press. The shtick is that you're a villain in your lair with a bunch of pesky "heroes" coming to get you, so you set up defenses and traps to stop them. You lair is underground, so you can also dig tunnels and find treasure and precious ore.

It's not the most polished game, and graphically it's a little simple, but there are a few things I still like about this one: the digging mechanic is great. It allows for pathing manipulation and a means of earning bonus resources and a way to diversify the level design, all in a single mechanic.

This is also the first tower defense game that I know of which implemented melee units for stalling enemies in a particular spot. I'd never claim that it was the first, I play a lot of tower defense games but my knowledge is by no means complete. Never the less, I give this one credit for implementing that mechanic three years before Kingdom Rush popularized it.

Finally, there's the protagonist unit which functions much like a hero unit in, again, Kingdom Rush. That's fine and all, but what I really like here is the fact that the protagonist gets equipment (i.e.: loot) over the course of a level. This can really add something when you're focused on defense but also running a side campaign to reach that tantalizing treasure chest juuust a little out of reach.

I should also add: I've linked the Kongregate version here because completeness is a requirement for this tribe. However, there is a Dungeon Defender Enhanced Edition on greyhoundgames.com with some extra features, along with some paywalled content. I don't consider this a violation of the spirit of this tribe, since the game as it was originally released was complete and is still available on Kongregate (and other places). The new stuff was added a couple of years later.

    Dungeon Defender

Description from the site: "An interesting blend of Real Time Strategy, Tower Defense, and RPG. Play as the Dungeon Master and send your minions to defeat the heroes!" It's not an RPG or an RTS, it's straight tower defense, but that doesn't mean it's just another clone. There are some unique aspects here.

    [web - flash] Renegades - sidescrolling X-Com

I really can't describe Renegades any better than "sidescrolling X-Com." It's a turn-based squad tactics game which has you completing mission-specific objectives, from rescuing prisoners to taking and maintaining control of certain buildings or areas. It has zombies, but your primary enemies can shoot back. Some people in the comments there have complained about the difficulty. That's always subjective, but I found it to be challenging enough to be satisfying, without ...

You should read Flatland if you haven't. There's a game based on Flatland actually... I'll post that some other time.

I love Z-Rox just for being interesting and original, but also for being accessible. It's one of those games which is very easy for a non-gamer to grasp and enjoy quickly.

[web - flash] Z-Rox - a one dimensional puzzle game

You know that bit in Flatland where the square is trying to explain what a sphere is to the other two dimensional people around him? A sphere is a point which grows to a small circle as it passes through the two dimensional plane, then grows to a bigger circle, then shrinks back to a point. I'm sure you all remember that. Anyway, that's Z-Rox in a nutshell except it's two dimensional figures passing through a one dimensional space.

[web - flash] Cyclomaniacs 2 - a stunt biking adventure

Thought I'd start with something beyond reproach - Cyclomaniacs 2 is stunt biking game in the same style as Bike Or Die or... any number of others. I don't know if the genre has a label yet, let's call them MHIMWS - My Head Is My Weak Spot. It's an amazingly full game for what it is, with a slew of interesting levels and minigames and varied challenges.

Thanks. I used #1, here are my three:

    SPZU-IVETUORJEDIC0

    SPZU-SSL6N9FTG7R3T

    SPZU-2PRJFU43I1ZVM

You can't search in snapzu unless you already have an account, which means that new users are going to have trouble finding this tribe. I found this by doing a google site search, but promoting this tribe on another website might be the way to go. For example, a website where are lot of people are currently dissatisfied and looking for alternatives. Just a thought.
