"There is no security on this earth, there is only opportunity". - General Douglas MacArthur

Heartbleed is an awful programming flub that affects millions. It's a flub that could have easily existed in proprietary products and never recognized. The fact is, Heartbleed was recognized due to the fact that the code was open and auditable by anyone with the relevant expertise. What would have happened if Google were working with some random vendor and run across this sort of bug? Would the vendor have clamped down on it? Released an update? Or let it simmer for years and threaten lawsuits the whole time?

There's an untold number of programming horrors safely kept out of public purview on corporate servers. In this instance, there was a massive problem and it was handled. While I might not be a huge fan of how it was handled, I think the speed at which it was accomplished is admirable.

While Microsoft has had years and years and years of flaws that have caused problems..Yet, do you ever hear people say "Windows mailware, spyware, Windows, botnet, virus,"etc.? No..You hear and read "computer virus, botnet,etc.." In reality, the problems is Windows, not some computer out there running Apple or Linux.
Yes, heartbleed is really bad,but look at the years and years of imperfections in Windows..Target was using Windows as an example when they got hacked. Most sites never mentioned this..Heartbleed does not imply,by any stretch of the imagination, ,that open source should be avoided.

If anything, open source should be embraced and properly funded. I found open source software to be far superior to software written by a closed number of individuals.

I totally agree. I've used it for ten years (Longer if you count Netscape and Firefox.) and will continue to do so. The whole world depends on open source and will continue to do so. I'm writing this with Ubuntu and Fire Fox.
