Summer-in-Antarctica
Behind the Argentina's Esperanza Base, on the Antarctic peninsula, it's possible to stand on a cliff and look down on a colony of 250 000 Adelie penguins. This area, the most frequented by penguins going to and from the sea, changes its appearance daily, depending on snowfall, blooms of algae in the ice, or the colors that the penguins drag along with their feet.

Wow, what gorgeous photos. I was curious about this line : "...or the colors that the penguins drag along with their feet." OK, this I need to know more about! A quick Google search brought me to an in-depth interview with photographer Gaston Lacombe talking about his trek to Antarctica.
The answer? "...The browns are sediments dirt released by annual thaw and carried across the surface of the ice by wind, melt-water, or creatures’ feet. Around the main penguin colony areas, the browns give way to pink. That’s down to diet and the call of nature. “Penguins eat a lot of krill,” says Lacombe. “Krill goes in pink when eaten, and comes out of the other side pink too.”"
Nifty! The more you know.
