I agree that pets should be fed proper food. However I believe its not that hard to buy fresh ingredients and use them in a stew type creation once a week. You can mix that with premium pet food to make the ultimate mix filled with everything an animal may need to be healthy.
You can find an example of what im talking about here.
I think and agree you can do that with dogs. I can also do that with my outside cat. I find that my inside cats will vomit if I don't keep them on the same diet. If for some reason I switch foods I have to mix the old food with the new food,before changing completely.

Just out of curiosity, what was the history behind the name "B.Squeak"? Would have though the cat on the right would be named "Ginger" ;)
His mother was Squeaker Lee,he became Baby Squeak. He is 15 pounds now not a baby anymore so B. Squeak.

My dog passed away and I have not got another.
I feel your pain. I lost my childhood dog almost 4 years ago, and I miss him terribly.
Yea we get attached to them.
It is almost tragic how we humans can get so attached to a totally different species. I'm glad we can though, a lot of times you cannot get that same type of friendship from other humans.

I guess I'm in the minority. I typically by my pup the cheap stuff.
whenever I bought the more expensive stuff, she would get diarrhea or vomit it all up. The cheap, HEB-branded dog food seems to work the best for her.
