    I learned from my mother and was willing to experiment.

      My wife is a huge fan of cooking, but while she obviously loves to follow recipes (especially when she likes someone's dish and asks for it) she rarely follows it word for word, and generally modifies it slightly to fit our palette. I completely agree that cooking shouldn't be about following recipes blindly and more about learning the chemistry and effects of each step on your end result. As for myself, I try... sometimes I fail, but I always get back on that horse!
