  • Tinea versicolor, the disease which causes discoloration of skin and rashes is subject to various misconceptions. The disease being caused by fungal infection or infection from yeasts on our skin is taken too seriously by some people and lead many people to consider it as a disease that can spread if exposed to the affected person from too close. There are several myths concerning the nature of the disease and its health effects. Here we would try to expose 5 common myths that are associated with the disorder.

    1. It is a serious disease

It is not a serious disease so as to cause any life threat or serious damage to our health. It is a type of fungal infection that causes discoloration or rashes on the skin and do not cause any pain syndrome. The infection is not capable to reach deeper beyond the skin and do not interfere with our organic system. You cannot be seriously ill from the disorder. 2. It is a contagious disease

Many people considering it as an infectious disease consider it contagious as well. But in reality the disease cannot transmit from one person to another by any means. Being exposed to a person affected by the disorder does not increase risk of getting the disease to any other person by any means. The fungal infection caused by this disorder is incapable to transmit between bodies. So fear of the disease as a contagious one is merely a myth.

    3. It is harmful for the body

Many people consider such skin disorder as a disease that can reach well beyond the layer of skin and can harm the tissues of the body or can pose serious health risks to the organic functions. But, this skin disorder except for creating discoloration and flaky, itchy rashes on the skin cannot do any major harm to our body. The problem caused by the disorder is mainly of cosmetic nature and do not pose any serious health threats. It does not cause any permanent or temporary damage to our health and body.

    4. It can never be fully cured

People who suffer from chronic skin problems or suffer from recurring cases of this disease consider that it cannot to be cured permanently. Many people who suffer from such skin problems often consider the medications for these disorders to be taken throughout the life without any hope of conclusive cure for them. But contrary to this perception the disorder can be permanently cured if the sufferer patiently undergoes treatment and follow the medications strictly as per the prescription of the attending physician.

    5. It is caused due to sunburn

Many people unnecessarily associate the disorder with the effects of sunburn which is a completely different type of skin problem caused by exposure to the ultra-violet rays of torching sunlight. Sunburn or exposure to the heat of the sun in a tropical climate can make one more susceptible to get such fungal infections but sunburn it is a different skin problem.
