Smoothie Making Tips

Give your smoothies a boost with a few of our expert tips and techniques. We asked the cooks in the Williams-Sonoma Test Kitchen for recommendations on new ingredients to use, how to achieve a perfect texture, and more. Read their advice below, then start blending!

  • Use frozen fruit. Not only is frozen fruit less expensive than fresh, it gives smoothies wonderful texture. It also eliminates the need for ice, so the flavor of the smoothie isn’t diluted. Buy organic frozen berries, since conventionally grown berries tend to have high pesticide residues. Alternatively, freeze in-season fruit in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a ziplock bag to have great-tasting frozen fruit at the ready when you feel like making a smoothie. If your fruit lacks flavor, you can always add a little bit of fresh juice, such as orange or apple, to liven it up.

Consider dairy alternatives. Milk and yogurt give smoothies added flavor, creamy texture and protein, but there are plenty of other options, too. Almond or soy milks work well, as does kefir — it lends a tangy flavor and a looser texture.

Add nuts and seeds. Peanut and almond butter add healthy fats and protein to smoothies — not to mention the flavor boost! Ground flax and chia seeds make tasty, nutritious add-ins as well.

Try new ingredients. Think leafy greens are just for juicing and salads? Think again! Kale and chard are surprisingly delicious in smoothies. If you prefer a sweeter drink, use natural agave, vanilla and honey to add sweetness and depth of flavor.
