Your Smartphone Knows You So Well It’s Scary (Infographic)

Smartphones offer a motherlode of convenience, in large part because of how much information they retain and, essentially, how well they know us. But is it possible they know a little too much?

  • The average consumer might be in for an unpleasant surprise about the amount of sneaky spying our smartphones actually do. Location-based apps, for example, can track your every move. But that doesn’t just help you check in to hip concerts and coffee shops to flaunt your superior taste to friends — it’s invaluable info for marketers, too. So don’t be shocked if sometime in the near future a push notifications vibrates in your pocket and your favorite app surprises you by suggesting a shop you didn’t even know was nearby. Of course, you can always opt out of location tracking, but that often comes at the expense of utility.

As smartphones become more ubiquitous and mobile technology becomes increasingly refined, our delicate relationships with location-based apps will become more and more interesting. That’s why the infographic below is such a useful primer. Put together by the Internet education portal OnlineColleges.com, it draws on information from a range of sources including the Pew Research Center and the Wall Street Journal to show just how much our smartphones are keeping tabs on us.
