(MAJOR SPOILER ALERT for the 8/6/17 episode -- GoT Season 7, Episode 4)
The counterexample in Lesson #4 can now be supplemented with an example from last night's Game of Thrones episode: that the Jamie and the Lannister army thought to bring with them Qyburn's, er, anti-dragon defense system. Even though they were not specifically expecting a Targaryen attack on their way to or back from Highgarden (and, indeed, outright anticipated that the Targaryen forces would be otherwise engaged), they nonetheless came prepared.
Granted, it was of only limited value, but better than nothing.
