The aircraft in the photo is one of the 8 Handley Page H.P.42's; it's known as 'Hanno.' It was named after the Carthaginian explorer Hanno the Navigator, who explored the Atlantic coast of Africa in approximately 570 BC.

Despite its somewhat shoddy appearance, Handley's were remarkably safe. In the ten years these biplanes were used, no civilian lives were lost. Handley's also offered a lot in terms of comfort; roomy seating, hot meals, a first class saloon, a cocktail area, and even an section designated for smoking were all features of the plane.

By 1940 (a year after the last Handley was decommisioned), however, every Handley had been destroyed in an accident. 'Hanno' was destroyed in a gale on March 19, 1940 over Bristol, England, when it was blown into 'Heracles,' another Handley.
