Pirate Satchel! Definitely not a purse!
I needed one of these for awhile to hold my belongings when I am out and about. So I DIY'ed one. I left the front flap undone to make it look more rustic/tough/piratical (I don't know), but it looks pretty decent. Took me about a month on and off to get it done. No it is not a Pirate Purse it is a SATCHEL DAMN'IT!!!!!

That's a pretty cool looking "satchel"! I don't know about the french braid for the strap though, maybe just tarred rope instead with a leather shoulder guard at the top?
I tried a flat leather strap but it was a bit flimsy. So i went with the braid for strength. The satchel is kind of a mess, there are so many things that didn't go well with the rivets. But it was a learning experience and I am not to proud to use it.
Don't worry too much, you will get better with experience!
That wold work. Since so many people have tablets and such,I feel in a few years it will be the norm for everyone to have totes for their gear.
My wife joked with me by saying "Great! A pirate purse! Now I have a place to put my tampons!" I actually made it to carry my phone, wallet, keys, and other items when I go to festivals. My outfits lack an abundance of pockets.
