A dad was executed for deaths of his 3 girls. Now a letter casts more doubt.

More than a decade after Cameron Todd Willingham was executed for the arson murder of his three young daughters, new evidence has emerged that indicates that a key prosecution witness testified in return for a secret promise to have his own criminal sentence reduced. In a previously undisclosed letter that the witness, Johnny E. Webb, wrote from prison in 1996, he urged the lead prosecutor in Willingham’s case to make good on what Webb described as an earlier promise to...

Why Daylight Saving Time System Needs To End Forever

Sometime during that nebulous post-SNL zone between 1 and 2 a.m. Saturday night/Sunday morning, it'll be time to turn the clocks forward one hour for daylight saving time (not savings), the biggest chronological scam in history. More enlightened states such as Arizona and Hawaii have cast off the chains of DST, but NY is still pointlessly tethered to it. We agree that it's great to leave work and still have an hour or two of sunlight, but this country doesn't need to...

This Is What Lockheed Martin's Laser Weapon Can Do to a Truck From a Mile Away

The fiery hole in this truck bonnet was burned through with a laser—from over a mile away. The point? To demonstrate how a laser weapon system could take a target out of action. I’m convinced. Defense company Lockheed Martin developed the prototype laser, which they call ATHENA, or Advanced Test High Energy Asset. In this test, the laser was in a ground-based system and the car was stationed on a platform with the engine running to imitate a real vehicle threat.

The man who beheaded a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus in Manitoba in 2008 has been granted more freedoms from the hospital where he is living, this time in the form of unsupervised day passes to visit Winnipeg. Tim McLean, 22, was stabbed and beheaded by Li aboard a Greyhound bus near Portage La Prairie, Man., on July 30, 2008. The Manitoba Review Board, which released its decision on Friday afternoon, also said it may consider eventually allowing Li to live in a group home.

    Iraqi libraries ransacked

When the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria invaded the Central Library of Mosul last month, it was on a mission to destroy a familiar enemy: other people's ideas. Residents say the terrorists smashed the locks that had protected the biggest repository of learning in the northern Iraq town, and loaded about 2,000 books — including children's stories, poetry, philosophy and tomes on sports, health, culture and science — into six pickups. They left only Islamic texts.

The Burden of Hosting a Super Bowl

In the case of Glendale, Arizona, funding the Peter Eisenman-designed University of Phoenix Stadium has allowed both things to come true. After years of frustration with a mediocre stadium in nearby Tempe, the Arizona Cardinals are comfortably settled in the Phoenix area for the long haul. Their state-of-the-art venue will host its second Super Bowl this Sunday.

Tokyo to Get $385 Million Hydrogen Makeover for Olympics

Tokyo plans to spend 45.2 billion yen on fuel-cell vehicle subsidies and hydrogen stations for the 2020 Olympics as part of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s plan to reduce Japan’s reliance on nuclear power. Japan’s capital will build 35 stations to fuel hydrogen-based FCVs and is in negotiations with Toyota Motor Corp. Guns, drugs and bandidos: inside the favela too violent for Rio’s armed police

“Yeah, I want to get out,” says Ricardo, 21. Then, relaxing, he takes the hand-grenade he has been toying with on his lap and places it amid the beer bottles on the table. In Vila Aliança in Bangu, western Rio, this is not particularly unusual behaviour. Outsiders rarely come to this lawless favela – a centre of the drugs trade in Rio de Janeiro – and the armed bandidos who guard the area from police raids and rival gangs had been monitoring my approach for miles.
