US strikes ISIS in Somalia for first time
U.S. forces conducted airstrikes Friday in Somalia against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants, their first against the terrorist group in that country. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said Friday that U.S. forces conducted two separate strikes in Somalia, killing “several” ISIS members. The first strike happened at about midnight local time, while the second happened at about 11 a.m., according to AFRICOM.

The drought is the most severe in living memory. Aid agencies believe more than 6 million people in Somalia need assistance, of whom about half are threatened with famine. People are leaving rural areas to where they think they will find food and water supplies, which humanitarian funding cannot sustain.

Al-Shabab fighters storm military base in Somalia
Somalia's militant Islamist group al-Shabab says it has carried out a major assault on a military base in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland. Its fighters killed 61 government troops and seized 16 vehicles in the dawn raid, the group said. A Puntland government minister has denied the high death toll, but did not give separate casualty figures. The al-Qaeda-linked group has carried out several big attacks on military bases in Somalia.

Somalia has blamed the Saudi-led coalition for an attack on a boat off Yemen’s coast that killed at least 42 Somali refugees. The attack, by a military vessel and a helicopter gunship, was condemned by the Mogadishu Government, which urged the US-led coalition to investigate. The boat was packed with dozens of refugees – some women and children – and was more than 30 miles of the coast when it came under fire.
