Albuquerque mayor: Here’s a crazy idea, let’s give homeless people jobs

There are more than 1,400 homeless people in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Now though, the state is working to get those people off the streets, by giving them jobs and living areas. Special Correspondent Kathleen McCleery reports on the city’s efforts.

"Instead of giving someone a ticket for standing on the corner panhandling, how 'bout we give them a better opportunity."

    Nicely put.

Edit: Plus, anyone with sense knows that fining panhandlers is just an excuse for punishing people for being poor; it's not like the majority of panhandlers have cash to spare from their lucrative businesses.

I'm so excited to read about this. I had no idea we were even doing this!

However we do have a problem in Albuquerque with professional panhandlers who beat up and push homeless people out of "profitable areas".

i've said this for a while, even if it's just a menial job like picking up trash or cleaning graffiti. Something similar to the CCC would be a good permanent program.
