Having immigrated to the US legally, I can say that I understand why a lot of people choose to bypass the legal system. It takes a lot of time, effort, frustration, and money. Having said that, if you bypass it and go illegal, you can't complain if you get penalized for it. There has to at least be some incentive to do things legally.
