Russian anger over Boris Johnson's decision to cancel Moscow trip

Russia has criticised Boris Johnson's decision to scrap a planned trip to Moscow after discussions with the US. The move showed the UK has no "real influence" over world events, Russia's foreign ministry said. Mr Johnson said events in Syria had "changed the situation fundamentally" and he would go to G7 talks instead.

Why tiny electric planes and $25 tickets could be the future of regional air travel

Imagine taking your next trip of a couple hundred miles. New York City to Boston, for example. Or Houston to Dallas. Tampa to Miami. The obvious choice now might be to drive. But what if you could show up at an airport at one of those cities, bypass security checkpoints, board a small hybrid-electric plane with luggage in hand, and be on the ground at your destination in about an hour — all for $25 each way? A company called Zunum Aero hopes to make that a reality, so that future travelers who...

Trump has scientists mad enough to march on Earth Day

It's not every day that scientists plan to head out of the laboratory and into the streets to protest, but on Earth Day, April 22, U.S. scientists have good reason to do exactly that. The protesters believe President Trump has no respect for the truth when it comes to well-settled science on some of the most critical questions facing the country. The scientists who plan to participate in the march fear Trump will suppress politically inconvenient research at federal agencies.

FCC removes competition requirement from Charter-TWC merger conditions

The FCC has reworked one of the key requirements it put on Charter’s 2016 merger with Time Warner Cable and Bright House, governing where the massive cable company expands to in the coming years. Under the original requirement, Charter had to expand its service to 2 million additional households within five years. But half of those households had to already be served by another broadband internet provider, forcing the cable giant to compete.

Ten Sovereign Citizens Face 320 Felonies in Tennessee

The suspects—all Tennessee residents—are charged with filing fraudulent liens and forgery, both felonies, which carry possible prison sentences upon conviction. A special prosecutor has been appointed to handle the case in Nashville. It began, authorities say, after one of the sovereign citizen defendants, Lee Harold Cromwell, filed bogus liens for millions of dollars after he was arrested for recklessly driving his Dodge Ram pickup backward, striking several people and killing a man in Oak ...

Wall Street's WhatsApp Secret: Illegal Texting Is Out of Control

Dirty jokes and NSFW GIFs. Snaps of unsuspecting colleagues on the trading floor. Screenshots of confidential client positions. All that -- and, on occasion, even legally dubious information -- is increasingly being trafficked over the new private lines of Wall Street: encrypted messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal. From traders to bankers and money managers, just about everyone in finance is embracing these apps as an easy, and virtually untraceable, way to circumvent compliance, get aro...

The White House is playing whack-a-mole with Russia investigations

The House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Trump associates’ ties to Russia is looking more compromised every day. Yochi Dreazen has a great rundown of the bizarre recent behavior of the committee’s chair, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), who sure seems like he’s bending over backward to protect the White House by canceling hearings and making odd, anonymously sourced claims. But if Nunes and the Trump administration truly are trying to scuttle the House Intelligence investigation, th...

New York City sues Verizon for failing to live up to fiber promises

Verizon is being taken to court after allegedly failing to provide adequate fiber services to New York City. The telecoms giant apparently has failed to fulfill a contract signed back in 2008 to give city residents the option to sign up for fiber-optic FiOS service by 2014. Now it is 2017, according to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, the city is "done waiting."

Bacon, soda & too few nuts tied to big portion of US deaths

Gorging on bacon, skimping on nuts? These are among food habits that new research links with deaths from heart disease, strokes and diabetes. Overeating or not eating enough of the 10 foods and nutrients contributes to nearly half of U.S. deaths from these causes, the study suggests. "Good" foods that were under-eaten include: nuts and seeds, seafood rich in omega-3 fats including salmon and sardines; fruits and vegetables; and whole grains.

FCC lets “billion-dollar” ISPs hide fees and data caps, Democrat says

ISPs with 250,000 or fewer subscribers won't have to follow rules that require greater disclosures about fees and data caps after a vote today by the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC's Republican majority approved the change to help small providers avoid "onerous reporting obligations" included in the 2015 net neutrality order, they said. But by setting the threshold at 250,000 subscribers and exempting small ISPs owned by larger companies, the FCC is effectively &q...

If Trump hates leaks, he needs to give up his phone

My favourite image of the week was a picture of the Queen opening the National Cyber Security Centre in London. Her Majesty is looking bemusedly at a large display while a member of staff explains how hackers could target the nation’s electricity supply. The job of the centre’s director, Ciaran Martin, is to protect the nation from such dangers. It’s a heavy responsibility, but at least he doesn’t have to worry that his head of state is a cybersecurity liability.
