Read the novel. It really is a breeze, and along the lines I would recommend to "hard" science fiction fans, and people just getting into the genre.
I agree it's a fun book to read, there are a couple of moments that I felt I should have paid more attention in Chemistry class to understand what was going on, but it's one of the best science fiction books I've read in a while.
