It’s been a long, strange trip from the New York City-art scene that nurtured The National during their infancy to their new, expansive tribute to the Grateful Dead, but it’s also been a natural evolution. Long before they were indie-darlings, four members of The National—twin guitarists Aaron and Bryce Dessner and the rhythm section of Scott and Bryan Devendorf—learned to play their instruments to the Dead’s music.
