When Ramen becomes the best option, your other options are really bad.
Wrong. The most valuable commodity in prison is the prisoners. Private prisons and the companies that provide goods and service to them, and non-private prisons as well, are making a killing ripping off prisoners. The sheriff's offices are also making a killing by taking a chunk off of the top. They are disgusting slime and the monetization of prisoners has got to end.
Something that makes this clear and apparent is that in one article it talked about what they were charging for the noodles, 59¢ or 69¢ a pack on something you can get for a quarter or less at most grocers.
That is the scam that is run by Aramark and the local jails and prisons. All of the food they provide is past the expiration date, so Aramark is selling food to the jails that should be thrown away. When I was at Riverside (a private jail in Virginia) the Little Debbie Swiss Rolls were $1.25 each. Back then (2003) a box at the store was $.99 for 12 of them, but they also were still fresh. They also charge a premium for stamps, which I thought was a federal crime. Don't get me started on telephone calls. These people prey on the poorest and most disenfranchised people in our society because they know those people have no voice. Every one of the people involved in this scam, from the sheriffs to the politicians to the businesspeople need to be put in prison for the massive fraud they have perpetrated on the American public. I fucking hate these people because I experienced their vile nature first hand. I was there for weed, in case you are curious.
Yeah the phone thing drives me fucking bonkers, my cousin had to have a minimum $20 on the account for phone calls and they were charged at like $1 a minute or something outrageous, then the account would fall under $20 and boom, need to top it off. Also on top of that, you could only have certain numbers on the account and anything more than their artificial number was an extra fee. That company eventually sent us a refund when they were replaced, but they were replaced with one of those companies wants to end visitation and replace with high dollar skype calls. The entire system needs to be overhauled to treat prisoners like people, but I figure I'll be long gone before anything meaningful happens.
